Mk1-Paul Posted November 18, 2014 Report Posted November 18, 2014 Just wondering is there anyone on here done a conversation on there osf with the engine and box out of a mx5? Im after converting my mk1 cortina and ive been told its been done but want to know how much ball ache it would cause to do it or is it fairly straight forward? Cheers
BigBubba Posted November 19, 2014 Report Posted November 19, 2014 Can't imagine it'd be any worse than a Zetec/XE conversion. Especially if you are using both the engine and 'box. If your considering Mazda, it's gotta be a Duratec though!!!
Admin Vista Posted November 19, 2014 Admin Report Posted November 19, 2014 Is it a great choice of engine to use though? The MX output power always looks a bit low to me
iandq Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 I would imagine it's an easy enough swap, it's also a good way to ruin a mk1 Cortina in my opinion, and it is just that, nothing personal meant ! cheers, ian.
SmokeEm Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 Not enough torque for a heavy oldskool Ford in my opinion.
mk2 mike Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 Why the MX5? Do you have one laying around?
BigBubba Posted November 20, 2014 Report Posted November 20, 2014 Not enough torque for a heavy oldskool Ford in my opinion. MX5 is probably heavier than a mk1 'tina. There's a lot of steel in those little convertibles. Power may well be an issue though, especially when it's easily extracted from a Zetec or XE. I say go for it if you like the idea of it, try and get a drive in an old mx5 first though to assess if the power delivery etc is appealing to you. You could always go mental and start bolting on throttle bodies or a supercharger!!!
Mk1-Paul Posted November 21, 2014 Author Report Posted November 21, 2014 Only reason being is i was told that someone has done it already and theres a complete mx5 for sale local to me for 300 quid. Are they a difficult engine to find more power from?

Are they a difficult engine to find more power from? You can supercharge them thats common i think .. ive seen a few a meets local to me with the mod
Monkfish Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 Respond well to forced induction and all the parts are easily enough sourced
SebringRS Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 One of my mates on Retards Club bought a mk1 Escort with a MX5 engine in, should think they go quite well, would guess weight wise an MX5 and Escort aren't far off, I know my mates 1.8 MX5 was a hoot to drive (only had about 120/130bhp).And being jap you could easily up the power for pence, seen a few rapid turbo MX5's
SmokeEm Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 As I said originally, the torque/power just doesn't justify it. A pinto swap is far easier and gives you the same bang for buck. Either that or a zetec using homemade water rails etc?
Mk1-Paul Posted November 24, 2014 Author Report Posted November 24, 2014 Smoke em have you got a guide to making a water rail by any chance as thats an expensive little pipe to buy
SmokeEm Posted November 24, 2014 Report Posted November 24, 2014 I'm afraid I haven't but I do know its been done for peanuts..
