davecrossflow Posted December 10, 2014 Report Posted December 10, 2014 ello everyone I don't have an escort but I have a crossflow engine I am building
mk2 mike Posted December 10, 2014 Report Posted December 10, 2014 Hello mate. What's the spec of the xflow and what's it going in eventually?
davecrossflow Posted December 24, 2014 Author Report Posted December 24, 2014 the crossflow will be near enough standard but will have a few tweaks probably to near enough GT spec then some other bits to suit having a turbo on it! I want to hook it up to a 5 speed gearbox, bit unsure whats involved in putting a 5 speed onto a crossflow this idea of engine is certainly appealing its called 1.4l pushrod turbo on youtube! I have made the intake to take an SU carb from a mg metro turbo carburetter & I know a chap local that can get it on the rolling road to tune it properly for the crossflow, I'm currently thinking on how to go about making the exhaust for a turbo, not sure what type of turbo to go for at the moment, I have two turbo's kicking about that I know are in good order, one is a t3 from the metro turbo the other is a Renault 5gt turbo which is a t2, typically they are both different flange sizes, I have driven two 2.0 non ford cars with t2 turbos & they pull well around town, nice & smooth torquey, the t3 is a bit more laggy & the power comes in later in the rpm range but I could possibly run more power with the t3 from the metro turbocharger making the turbo exhaust manilfold will be hard, I've not done this sort of cutting/shutting before, I have done some fab but not tubing! I'm not planning to run much boost at all, maybe 10-12psi absolute maximum!!!! I have an old ford RS turbo intercooler which should be easy enough to add in once its up & running, I have an oil cooler kit for a crossflow, its a bit 2nd hand but should clean up ok, cooling wise i'll be heading to the scrappers for an old van radiator, this I think will be the hardest part to fit in my car (space is super super tight) I have a turbo oil drain union for a sump somewhere & a walbro 155 fuel pump & turbo fuel pressure regualtor so I think I have basiclally all the parts needed to make a low boost turbo motor setup, ignition will be done with megajolt which I have from a previous project that never happened, the megajolt i'll get working on the current engine in the car so I know spark is sorted, same as the fuel supply, i'll wire all that in on the current carb engine at 2/3psi then its HOPEFULLY a case of making adjustments for when I fit the turbo crossflow, if the turbo part doesn't work out then at least i'll have a gt spc 1600 motor in my car which is double the power of the current engine! any advice help is much appreaciated!
quickrack Posted December 24, 2014 Report Posted December 24, 2014 The 5 speed is easy. You need a clutch disc the same size as the crossflow one( 195mm I think) but with the splines to fit on the gearbox. 23 Spline ?? Usually classed as early 4 speed sierra pinto on parts databases. Otherwise it bolts straight on to the engine. Good luck!
Lizzy Posted December 26, 2014 Report Posted December 26, 2014 I had a Type 9 Sierra box fitted to the 1600 crossflow in my Mk3 Cortina - that's 23 spline, and it fitted fine. (I can feel a rap coming on...) I'm wondering if I can do the same with the 1300 crossflow Mk1 Escort I've just bought? 1
davecrossflow Posted December 27, 2014 Author Report Posted December 27, 2014 cheers lizzy, been a bit hesitant in putting my hand in my pocket to buy a gearbox for my engine! from your thread on ya 1300 we are in the same position at the mo!
Lizzy Posted December 28, 2014 Report Posted December 28, 2014 I'm going to visit Apsley Transmissions next weekend to discuss exactly what I need to get to marry the type 9 to my 1300 crossflow. I'll pass on any info I get. In the meantime, let me know if you have any specific questions you want me to ask. I know the guy down there is into customising and racing, so... 1
