nobby911 Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 I have just bought this mk1 escort and its 18 years since i last had one so all your help, advice and patience will be arppreciated. where do i start. a) roller top mounts on the struts, do these help make the steering a bit lighter, if so what type and how hard are they to fit. Its been fitted with discs all round and a brake bias box which correct me if i'm wrong i don't think is needed on a road car. Any way considering its discs all round i don't think the brakes are that good would it be better to fit a servo instead of the bias box. C) Does anyone know a garage in beds/northants area that do this sort of work on modified OSF. D) you can see the wheels in the picture, well i am ging to change these for minilites also they are 15's which i think are 2 big what's the best size etc to go for. Sorry for all the question but after spending last year in and out of hospital having chemotherapy (in remmission at the mo) I promised myself an OSF its only now its on the drive i realise i haven't actually got a clue what to do
tim Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 retro ford are based in corby,there northampton motorsport in northampton roller top mount make the steering lighter,best to go for are the rubber roller top mount. if u can fit 13s then get some 13x7

jay Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 how do mate, personaly i would keep the bias box.. get it set up properly, northampton motorsport do it.... or dave at retroford in corby is the nuts in 'osf's' too...... 15" wheels i dont think are too big(ive got em on me eccie to) but the wheels on your eccie, i feel dont suit it..... hope you recover ok mate... btw your mk looks the nuts......

Would 13x7 fit without rubbing and if so what make/profile tyres would be best. James HPE Motorsport Posted February 17, 2007 Report Posted February 17, 2007 Roller top mounts are a good start and will make your steering a little lighter. I think you will find that the brakes are probably fine, its just you are used to a more modern car where you only have to rest your foot on the brake to get it to stop. Try pushing it alot harder or you could try some softer brake pads. Personally I would keep the bias box because otherwise I think you will find that without it you will start locking the rear wheels. The brake bias box is designed to allow you to adjust the braking effort between the front and rear wheels. may just need setting up properly! My personal opinion is that the wheels you have dont suit your car. If you are after superlites then you either go for the 13x6 or the wider 13x7 which have a bigger offset/dish to them. Peeps correct me if im wrong but the 13x7 wheel will fit the MK1 but you have to run a smaller tyre such as a 175/50 13 so that they dont rub the rear arches?!?! The smaller 13x6 will go straight on with the usual 185/60 13 tyre. Hope this helps
nobby911 Posted February 18, 2007 Author Report Posted February 18, 2007 I am going to get the brakes tested and setup properly i don't expect them to be like a modern car but with the following spec (i am quoting this from the spec sheet) BRAKES hi-spec motorsport billet four pot callipers,285mm drilled vented discs,braided front hoses,bias pedal box,275mm drilled rear discs,cosworth rear callipers. i thought they would be alot better than they are i seem to press and press and eventually it stops me but by then its usually locked up a bit. James HPE Motorsport Posted February 18, 2007 Report Posted February 18, 2007 I have got Wilwood four pot front calipers and cossie rear calipers on my mk2 and I know what you mean, they are not as good as I thought. Before mine is back on the road I am going to change the pads to softer compound ones as at the mo I have to ride the brakes to the end of my road (about 100metres) to get them hot before they work properly. Them wheels are lovely. As I said previously you will have to check with some1 who has fitted 13x7 to get the tyre size confirmed but im sure they will fit with a 175/50 13
nobby911 Posted February 18, 2007 Author Report Posted February 18, 2007 I will ask around about the wheels you don't think 13's will look 2 small, They are doing a wheel and tyre deal at the moment and the tryres are Yokohama 175/50/13. I don't really understand the bias box thing apart from adjusting front to rear but correct me if i'm wrong i was always lead to believe if you want good brakes you need a server.
