VivaLaRic Posted March 9, 2015 Report Posted March 9, 2015 Does anyone know how to interperet foreign chassis numbers for instance mine is South African with AAPV before the numbers?
Admin Vista Posted March 9, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 9, 2015 you,ll be good for tax exempt in april mate Everyone is assuming that that is a given. It does need confirmation from the chancellor before it happens.
Admin Vista Posted March 9, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 9, 2015 Does anyone know how to interperet foreign chassis numbers for instance mine is South African with AAPV before the numbers? No idea sorry. But we do have a number of South African members who may he able to help you.

Everyone is assuming that that is a given. It does need confirmation from the chancellor before it happens.Vista The government document looks pretty clear that each year the date will move a year on. Im not sure we need actual confirmation, but then again I'm regularly wrong
Admin Vista Posted March 9, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 9, 2015 Agree that document looks pretty conclusive but if you read this article and/or question DVLA directly on the issue (as we had to do as part of the process of becoming recognised by them) they will still state that the Historic Vehicle cut off date won't be advanced a year without a statement from the Chancellor http://www.classicandsportscar.com/news/general-classic-car-news/george-osborne-no-rolling-tax-exemption-for-classics Edit, the extract below from that document you posted makes me laugh! £40,000 a year costs from a change in cut off date? How does that work out? A systems change cost of at least £40,000 will be met by the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) to revise the qualifying cut-off date for the exemption each year.
bigbadsquare Posted March 9, 2015 Report Posted March 9, 2015 See what you mean, have to see what happens then ????
Admin Vista Posted March 9, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 9, 2015 See what you mean, have to see what happens then ???? Fingers crossed. I'm still hoping for the best 1
scootlife Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 Im just about to sorn mine so i can get the remaining paid tax back, but might have to wait just to make sure it will be tax exempt from april. Any ideas on how and when they will get free tax and how do you apply ???
Admin Vista Posted March 15, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 15, 2015 If your car was 1st registered in 74 then you should just be able to send your V5c off requesting a change in taxation class to "Historic Vehicle". If it was 1st registered in 1975 but manufactured in 1974, then you'll need to prove that before they'll change your taxation class for you.
scootlife Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 Yes mines registered may 74 built apr74. It will probably be typical DVLA nonsense that you can't change till after 01 april and then they wont give you aprils tax back like they do when selling car now. Question is do i sorn it now or at the end of the month? Then I've the hassle of waiting for new v5 to arrive before retaxing !! Or do I try to be clever and send it recorded delivery to arrive on the 01Apr ??? Cos I bet if I send it now for taxation class change it would be sent right back with a note saying too early !! Oh the joys of the DVLA

Danish Posted March 15, 2015 Report Posted March 15, 2015 This seems very confused. The government's own website says there is a 40 year rolling programme: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/vehicle-excise-duty-40-year-rolling-exemption-for-classic-vehicles In the linked PDF document it says: "The exemption cut-off date in Schedule 2 of the Act will be changed to 1 January 1974 to apply from 1 April 2014 as announced at Budget 2013, and to 1 January 1975 to apply from 1 April 2015 as announced at Budget 2014. This will be legislated in Finance Bill 2014. "
Admin Vista Posted March 15, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 15, 2015 Hope you're right. Let's wait and see.
bigbadsquare Posted March 16, 2015 Report Posted March 16, 2015 Is there a form you need to fill out when you send your v5 off? Or just a covering letter ?
Admin Vista Posted March 18, 2015 Author Admin Report Posted March 18, 2015 Confirmed in the budget on page 87 of the 124 page document, which I've extracted and attached. Check point 2.165 All good for exemption from pre Jan 1st 1975 this year, the change happening on April 1st. And looking at the extract, looking good for next year too. Budget 2015 extract.pdf 4
scootlife Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Also, Ive just spoken to DVLA and they have confiemed so long as you SORN in march you will get the full tax back from 01 april onwards. And also no need to wait for V5 to come back as can take to local post office , fill in the change of tax class to "Historic" and they will issue free tax on 01April and send off V5 to swansea for you too ..
volvoboy73 Posted March 19, 2015 Report Posted March 19, 2015 Mine was registered August 1975 so another year to wait, although it's in a million pieces at the moment so might be able to get away with 6 months tax and then SORN for the balance to get through to next April Still better than driving one of those silly electric cars to be tax free

Unlikely that it sat around for 8 months but not impossible. I had one a few weeks ago that wasn't registered till June 75 but was built Dec 74
bigbadsquare Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 Does anybody know if I can register as historic without an mot ?
Danish Posted March 21, 2015 Report Posted March 21, 2015 Does anybody know if I can register as historic without an mot ? I doubt it. I just changed my car's tax class from "disabled" to "PLG", and I could only do that as I taxed it - so it had to be insured and MOT'd to make the change. 1
