Ruby Slippers Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Hi All, just joined in the hope somebody could give me some pointers . My Dad has a milestone birthday coming up next year and I would love nothing more than to be able to get him a escort mk 1 or 2 as it has been his lifelong dream to own own one, but always spent his small amount of money on his family. Where do i start? I need something which is mechanically sound but aesthetically needs repairing as Dad could do this himself. Price range ??? I've seen prices from 1500 to 25k so I need an idea of the current value. Any advice would be greatly appreciated, Thanks in advance Ruby
mk2 mike Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Hi and welcome to the site. How long is a piece of string? Prices for escorts are as varied as the spec of them. The £25k you mentioned will be for top of the range sorted cars. Either nut and bolt restorations or race/rally spec. It really depends what you want. 2 door cars always command higher prices, mk1s are more expensive than mk2s. You could look for a 4 door, or even an estate which can be found for less. (Again mk2s cheaper than mk1s). What sort of car would your dad like? A sporty model or a totally standard example? Do YOU have a price range? As that might cut your choices. Cars are available but without a better idea of what you're hoping for it would be difficult to give you an accurate guide!
mk2 mike Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Oh and another thing I've just thought of. If you see a really nice, clean car on eBay (for example) for £3/4k be careful. There's lots of scammers and con artists trying to rip people off. If you see a car on such a site that you like, ALWAYS ask advice about it on here if you're not sure. The old ford world is actually very small and if it's a genuine car, someone on here will probably know about it and be able to vouch for it. 3
Ruby Slippers Posted June 3, 2015 Author Report Posted June 3, 2015 Thank you for the reply Mike - what a star, it's very helpful! You are spot on with the whole eBay thing - any seller would see me coming a mile off so it's nice to know I can get some honest advice from the experts. Well I think he would be made up with a standard 4 door mk2 if this is more realistic for me. Actually he would be happy with something just in the garage which he could tinker with every day and do up slowly - but not a massive project as he ain't a mechanic. Price wise I'm sure he mentioned around 8k when dreaming about it but I was hoping for <5k. Ruby
SmokeEm Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 You'll get a good unmolested 4 door for that. Just make sure its running and driving with recent MOT and you should be ok with 5k
mk2 mike Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Agreed on above. That's a realistic price for a nice 4 door.
HotRodMatt Posted June 3, 2015 Report Posted June 3, 2015 Looks a nice car but I think those are Capri Laser wheels, not RS 4 spokes judging by the metal around the wheelnuts. Be aware that details on some cars can be wrong which can affect the price too.

RIKB80 Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 Where about's in Yorkshire are you? I live in Leeds and may be able to give you a few pointers if you're looking at something not a million miles away. Take it you want something that you can drive away? With your budget you're probably somewhere firmly in Mk2 4 door Ghia territory, 2 doors you're spending more money for less doors, so a mint 4 door needing little work could well be the same price as a ropey Mk2 2 door. A few years ago I had a mk2 1600 GL 4 door and a mk2 RS2000 (2 door). I paid just over twice the price of the GL for the RS and guess which one is still MOT'd and on the road and which one ended up getting stripped down for salvagable parts before the shell got swept into the back of a lorry!
irishtorag Posted June 4, 2015 Report Posted June 4, 2015 8k stg gets you a good 11k euro 2door I know I sold orange one in my profile few weeks ago as for more door I bought a 4dr for 2k euro needed wing off one side and wing rail repair and a lick of paint, not bad for a 2k euro car
