So I've got my new xflow build in my escort and it's almost ready to be started for the first time in god knows how many years, any advice/things I should do aside from giving it a good once over before trying it?

Posted

Cheers i did that, just gone to start it and nothing happens apart from a click, so I might have missed something somewhere, starter maybe?

Posted

Okay so the click went and the starter just started to whine instead, so the starter is missing on the flywheel?

I've got the inertia type starter from my 1100, I may need the other type, I'm using a 1300 flywheel.

I did try and turn the engine to help it but it made no difference and after a couple of goes it just reverted to the click it made when I first turned the key

Yeah totally fine, and no I havent tried that I'll give it a go tomorrow, got dark before I could try much more

Charged battery today no different, checked wiring etc and it's still no further, it must be the wrong starter or something?

You do get some problems, need to establish a few things regarding starter/ ring gear compatability was the flywheel on the engine you got if so how many teeth has it? Are you using pre engaged or inertia starter? From memory two ring gears 110 and 132 tooth and 9/10 starter teeth some where you would be able to find out which goes with which. It may just be a starter problem but with you swapping parts around best to find if there matched before buying a starter and having the same problem. look at this way by the time you've done this conversion you will have encountered most of the problems you could come across and you can pass on advice to others

Yeah I've got the inertia starter from my 1100, I wouldn't be surprised if it's not compatible with the 1300 flywheel. I expected stuff like this from using a mismatch of parts, I've heard a variety of thoughts on what can and cant be mixed/matched so it's good trying it out in practice to see for sure.

I'm going to take the starter off after work and have a look at it and go from there as to whether I'll need the other type or not.

Cheers guys :)

Starter off, it's got 10 teeth, checked my old 1100 flywheel and it has 110 teeth so by elimination the 1300 flywheel fitted in the car should be 132?

I had a starter problem when first got my escort had an earlier ring gear, 110 teeth with later starter, but the starter did try to mesh with the ring gear, just sort of made screeching noise when it didn't catch? Yours doesn't sound like it's engaging anything just the starter whizzing over?

Yeah I agree it sounds like that, just trying to figure out whats wrong and where so I can change whatever it is

And praying I don't have to pull the engine out again for the 4th time if its something flywheel related

Although I may be able to get hold of the starter that the 1300 flywheel im using had, its the other type so it would need some wiring changed as they appear to use 3 wires instead of just 1 like my inertia starter

Ok so I bought James' 1300 starter its on the way, hopefully that could be a solution?

I'm using his 1300 flywheel on my 1600 so fingers crossed it should work

Time for a bump as I've now got the starter on, extending the wiring so it reaches and now it turns the engine over...

Where should I go from here to (hopefully/maybe) get it fired up?

Haha already done that, wish it was that easy. It needs some fiddling somewhere, going to have a look tomorrow

Glad i have the right starter now because its some progress :)

Not yet as I've been busy with other stuff and the weather has been a bit grim

I had a similar issue with it not running this time last year with the old engine, went through and changed points condenser etc etc and in the end it was just a fuse!

Found a wiring diagram and mine is setup the same except for the red, where should I go with the red one?

This one says fuse box but that's on the complete other side of the engine bay - I could extend it to reach but that seems a bit odd?

I have just seen this though, you can just see it by the fuse box so that must be the way to do it

Should go to ign feed. Go to ign switch but make sure still has feed when in starting position. Also off when ign turned off. So not a perm feed or it won't stop when you turn it off!
