andrewg1323 Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Basically i;ve converted my Mk3 Capri wings to be bolt on and i;m not sure on the legalities, anyone here have any ideas? Is it a case of shove it in for MOT and hope Mr Tester doesnt notice? The new setups definately stronger than before what with the wing rails being more substancial so i can bolt into em...
RETRO_AL Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 ask retro is converted my wings to bolt on,cant see a problem myself
Danmex Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I've wonderd this before, I wanted to fit fibre glass wings to mine, but would the inner wings need beefing up to support the load?
Fiesta Steve Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 What load ? You can stick them on with glue if you like, as long as they are secure
Danmex Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Won't they flex more or is my strut brace enough?
perry Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 ive got glass wings and the only thing that remotely looks like strengthening is the type 49 strut tops who says a wing is a structual panel anyway
Danmex Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 It helps support the inner wing which supports the struts
Fiesta Steve Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Won't they flex more or is my strut brace enough? You don't even need a strut brace. The original stucture of the car is fine.
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 The stength at the front of any car comes from it's inner wings and chassis rails. All major suspention and load bearing components are located to these parts. Wings are merley cosmetics and to keep the lines of the car. That is why you shoundn't have tyres/wheels poking out of the wings!!!

perry Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 It helps support the inner wing which supports the struts it doesnt really though does it dan if they were so strong there wouldnt be any spaced framed front ends in the world
Danmex Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 I'll stick to aircraft structure then I know what I'm talking about with that
Jimbob-Squarepants © Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 Mate, don't worry about it. If you don't ask, you ain't going to know. That is one of the reasons this site exists, to pass on knowledge!!! Always Ask
andrewg1323 Posted September 25, 2006 Author Report Posted September 25, 2006 I'll leave the bolts in then! Gonna have to bolt it into the a pillar though i thinks, doubt the MOT tester will ike the way i;ve currently got it bolted through the lip near the sill!
Retromotorsport Posted September 25, 2006 Report Posted September 25, 2006 if you have a look at how many cars out there have GRP'ed and newspaperd up at the wing rails , you'll see that a few bolts through strong metal is probably better. I tested a rot box... jacking it up after measuring across the strut tops and it measured up +5mm when the wheels where off the ground. On a car with bolted wings 2mm and with the strut brace 0mm
Awesome Al Posted September 26, 2006 Report Posted September 26, 2006 What load ? You can stick them on with glue if you like, as long as they are secure Agreed
