As you are a yorkshire man you only have to go up the M1 onto the a1 link and you can see them there. I've been down that m40 dozens of times over the years deerstalking and usually count dozens of red kites soaring around. It's all well and good to have this many kites but they survive on carrion. There's never enough dead animals in the Countryside to tolerate this many carrion feeders so therefore rely for the most part on people feeding them. Fozzy

Buzzards have increased in numbers around my way over the last couple of years. We get them in the field behind the house and often see them out the front window too. There's been a project for a few years now to release red kites at Harewood house in leeds so these are the ones, or relatives of the ones I see on the A1. Kites are so distinctive from any other bird of prey with their slimmer wings and forked tail, as against the buzzard which has broader wings and a curved convex tail. Fozzy
preacherman Posted October 8, 2017 Report Posted October 8, 2017 When I was a bird spotter in late 70,s the red kite was confined to a small area in wales under very strict protection and maybe 60 birds. I now see them every week and it's a great conservation story. Many hundreds of years ago they scavenged in the streets of London but were were blamed for disease and hence they were killed. In Hong Kong they have black kites scavenging and nest on the high rise block. Goshawks are becoming rarer these days
RWL81P Posted October 8, 2017 Author Report Posted October 8, 2017 yeah heard about the ones at harewood house, saw 1 over harrogate a few years back. thats the only time ive seen them untill yesterday. got 3 buzzards regularly circle our house in the thermals.
RWL81P Posted October 8, 2017 Author Report Posted October 8, 2017 only seen gos hawks at zoos, there is a couple of harris hawks near me too. a bloke round the corner has harris hawks and theyre always escaping. got woods at the end of my street so great for them to hide too.
Fozzy48 Posted October 8, 2017 Report Posted October 8, 2017 There were a pair of goshawks near me on the edge of the moors a few years ago. Very much like a sparrowhawk but lighter coloured. Seen hen harriers too. Saw a male when stalking at Berwick upon tweed and saw a female last year at saltfleet hunting over the marshes. I've had sparrowhawks take wood pigeons from my decoys when shooting too, but they're welcome to them. Fozzy

I've been lucky enough to see an osprey too, once again whilst out deerstalking at Tweedsmuir in the Scottish Borders. That land also had short eared owls on. Fozzy
