colr6 Posted July 1, 2018 Report Posted July 1, 2018 Has anyone used the electric brake booster off say Sierra/ Granada ? Got nowhere to put normal remote servo, apart from the boot!! When I fitted a remote servo on the Anglebox it suffered with a slight delay before working and TBH it was a bit unnerving. So thought of going electric. Any suggestions or advise welcomed.
Kenbex522 Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Wasn't aware Ford were fitting electric boosters to Sierra's and Grannies. Some had motorised ABS units but not brake boosters/servos I'm sure. I fitted a rebuilt remote Girling unit to my Corsair beginning of the year, certainly no delay with that. After the recent Lakes Tour i'm glad I did fit it!!

I may have interpreted the wrong way then on the way this thing works, the problem I have now is with running turbo you won't have vacumn when on boost. This is the reason for looking at alternative methods. On my Anglebox I used a new servo off mgb and got the results of a slight delay, another member also had the same problem. So could be an incorrect matching that may be the cause of the problem.
katana Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Who brakes when on boost? Off the throttle and vacuum is pretty much instant for a servo. If the bay is full, can't you get a remote under the dash?
colr6 Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 Under the dash is full, not a great deal of space under rear seat so only leaves the boot. Suppose I could run 10mm copper pipe under the car for a supply of vac. So going along those lines of remote, is there a way of calculating correct servo size?
Kenbex522 Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 You can buy little motorised vac motors I'm sure. I thought I'd read about someone doing this recently but cant remember where I saw it. As all remote servos detect fluid pressure before reacting, is it possible there was still a bit of air trapped in the system. Was it a proper Lockheed or a chinese copy servo? dont think the copies are all that from what I've heard. I know some of the Anglia boys have mounted theirs in the wheel arch with suitable cover over it, another where the glove box sits. I know of another who has three in the boot. Two for brakes and one for clutch!
colr6 Posted July 2, 2018 Author Report Posted July 2, 2018 I suspect if may have been a cheepo, got it from MG hive about £70. I even went to supplying two vac pipes assuming there wasn't enough from one carb runner, but to no avail ! Might have to go under the bed and get some cash out and try and purchase a real one....lol I thought I'd seen someone on here using the Sierra/ Granada set up but couldn't find it! Sure it was john mk1 v6 but had a look through his threads but a no go.
Kenbex522 Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Car builder solutions sell real remote boosters/servos not sure if they have any stock of the smaller 5.5" one, they didn't when i needed one. Hence why I had to bite the bullet and get a rebuilt Girling unit. I'm really not sold on those Lockheed copies, and MG Hive do sell the copies, they're only a few miles from me.
DT36 Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 Thinking a little outside the box here, Col: Do any of the trucks you work on have a small accumulator like the Rexroth diaphragm bell type, maybe for a hydraulic circuit or emergency brake/trailer reserve? If so, do you think you could plumb one in to overcome the delay and assist in faster re-fill.
Danish Posted July 2, 2018 Report Posted July 2, 2018 When I was looking at changing from a standard Ford master cylinder with servo to bias pedal box, the guy who was going to do the work suggested an electric booster for the front circuit only - to replace the vacuum servo and help with front/rear bias. The other idea we had was to change to a Transit turbo diesel alternator which has a vacuum pump on the rear for running the brakes. I haven't actually done any changes yet though, so can't give any more info.

That was going to be my next suggestion - got to be worth some consideration? I'm guessing most diesel engined cars will have something similar?
