Due to repairs and painting I had to take the original rubber boot mat out of the car. I have tried to keep it safe but it is very fragile and more brittle than it once was when it was made in 1970s. No matter how far out of the way I put it someone always kicks it or treads on it and now the edges are being damaged and I thought of putting a rubberised tape edging around it it try sure up the frayed ends. I have seem some pretty bold infomertials on Flex Tape and T-Rex Tape but when you read the fine print it says for temporary repairs only. Anyone suggested a long lived rubberised tape to protect the ends of large rubber mat for the boot?

Have you got a local carpet store near you that can bind the edges?

I've had this done recently for our stair treads and also had some car mats done this way. Fairly inexpensive.

This is gonna sound weird but if it is a 'true' rubber then what about getting a bicycle inner tube, cut it into strips and get some rubber cement and paint both parts following the instructions and fix strips to the mat edges as a reinforcement? Nothing ventured - nothing gained!

Actually there was damage to one part where it dips into the boot well and I did repair that with a bike tube repair kit. The edging though is not as robust and starting to fray from people kicking it. It was only that I saw an add for Rubberised Flex tape that is 4 inches wide that I had an idea, 2 inches at the back and then fold over another 2 inches on top and binding the entire outside of the thing. Being black and rubberised I thought it may not be overly noticeable and at least offer some edge protection.
