Johnny Boy Posted October 17, 2023 Report Posted October 17, 2023 Quick question, would this alloy bellhousing, alow me to fit a type 9 gearbox into a mk2 escort, without bashing the bulkhead about, what's involved ? https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/382333130829?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=c3eByFglQNC&sssrc=4429486&ssuid=jDL8pYnSTce&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY Cheers johnny
caprimk1v4 Posted October 18, 2023 Report Posted October 18, 2023 It does indeed bolt up to a Type 9 5 speed, but the bell-housing is larger in diameter than the outgoing type 2 gearbox, so you will have to massage the tunnel as required to get the box/bell-house in. I am pretty sure the only Escort MK2 body shell that does not require much if any knocking about, is the Automatic cars, as they have a larger transmission tunnel in the first place.
caprimk1v4 Posted October 18, 2023 Report Posted October 18, 2023 Just out of interest, just been into my garage and measured a standard cast B/H as opposed to a RS2000 ali type, and the RS2000 B/H is smaller, so might just fit, I have never done a 5 speed conversion, all my cars are the standard 4 speeds.

My RS uses a T9 with a RS bell - no bumping of body panels required. I don't believe the RS shells are any different in this area to 'normal' shells. I understand that if a T9 with an integral bell ie. cast iron one will require some massage or a auto tunnel. As 'real' RS bells are getting expensive, the aftermarket ones are a good replacement!

I didn want to do that to my van.

Thanks for the info, just what I needed to know.👍

caprimk1v4 Posted October 18, 2023 Report Posted October 18, 2023 I bought 4 gen RS B/H along with a "Close ratio" type "E" box from a banger racer in Plymouth for £125, but it was back in 1987, never ever got around to putting the box into a road car to replace the "wide ratio" box as standard, been told unless your after "SPRINTING" stick with the normal "E" box, but never driven anything with the other type in, so don't know.
katana Posted October 18, 2023 Report Posted October 18, 2023 The close ratio type E is the rare Rocket Gear set and is really intended for competition as a too tall diff ratio would be difficult to pull from standstill and around town but if the engine is kept spinning with high revs the close ratio's are great so i'm told. I guess £125 was good money considering you could buy a whole Escort for £5-600 LOL!
