Tinker time is upon us again.

Engine coming out in New Year as I need to change the sump gasket.

I've always used Cork ones in the past but have seen a rubber replacement alongside the competition  types.

Does anyone have any thoughts on the use of the rubber gasket?

Personally, if the engine has to come out for replacement, the chance of a leak with the cork puts it below the rubber type in my preference stakes! From what i've seen, when a sump gasket starts leaking its easy to crank on the bolts which, just because of the crushability of cork, tends to distort the steel pan and makes the leak worse! Make sure the pan flange is flat , use a smear of RTV and actually use a torque wrench - they are only a few inch / ounces torque rated but you don't want to be taking it out again in 6 months!

It does have a Cork one now hence the thought about a rubber one as they don't crush the same.

The synthetic over the natural would be my preference - yes! (but that's just me - they are equally good if done right)
