MK5 Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 i desperately need a drivers side brake caliper for my mk5 Cortina. went to use her today and found a pool of brake fluid under the wheel. not good as she's my daily driver
Rick Posted March 25, 2007 Report Posted March 25, 2007 dont think your caliper will be knackered prob a seal or joint popped
MK5 Posted March 25, 2007 Author Report Posted March 25, 2007 i've blown a caliper seal - don't have the facilities to rebuild a caliper, so was hoping to swap one out...
Admin Vista Posted March 25, 2007 Admin Report Posted March 25, 2007 i've blown a caliper seal - don't have the facilities to rebuild a caliper, so was hoping to swap one out... If you have a set pf spanners then trust me you have the facilities to rebuild a caliper. Pop the pistons far out enough to grab with a foot or bicycle pump attached to the hydraulic inlet connection, (if they're really stuck go down the local garage and use their airline) Unbolt and split the two halves Withdraw the pistons all the way out and clean up any sludge behind them, blow some carb cleaner through all the passage ways then leave them to dry out thoroughly. Clean the pistons thoroughly and check they're condition Put the new seals into the caliper halves then lubricate them with some brake fluid and insert the pistons back into the caliper halves and push them home. Then bolt them back together ensuring they're evenly torqued. Hey presto job done, put them back on the car and bleed them. I would examine the pistons thoroughly for any evidence of what damaged the seal in the first place though, you may need new pistons too. If you fit used calipers, what's to say the same thing won't happen to them 2 weeks later?
MK5 Posted March 25, 2007 Author Report Posted March 25, 2007 thanks guess what i'm doing on Saturday...?
MK5 Posted March 26, 2007 Author Report Posted March 26, 2007 apparently i can use a caliper from a MK2 Escort, MK2/3 Capri (not 2.8i) and MK3/4/5 Cortina... anyone?
