I wanted to do a couple of rounds of the OSFDC but I have been warned against it because my car 'sounds as if it is pinking' So what is pinking, how do I tell if it is pinking and how do I cure it? Please help because apart from my gearbox falling off on sunday everything is great!

Pinking is pre-ignition as described in the link, take your car for a tune up and try using 97 Octane superunleaded if you're using 95 Octane unleaded. Lower octane petrol explodes rather than burning in a controlled manner, hence the noise you're hearing (an additive might help if you want to stick with 95 octane fuel). Don't be suckered into paying a fortune for the super high octane stuff though as it's not necessary.

Take a look at this too

As soon as I fitted the engine I had it tuned and the carb's balanced. I have always run it on the highest octane fuel possible with castrol valve master additive. I need to take it to a decent tuner although the one I used first was weber approved. :(

Tweeking the dizzy will probably solve the problem unless its running lean.

I'd take it to Track and Road, just thew other side of the Dartford tunnel and get it tuned properly.

I don't know what the links above say but i'd describe 'pinking' as someone rattling a ball bearing in a metal can.

I had a x-flow that used to pink, it melted a hole in the piston on the M20 on the way to Bromley pagent.

Spot on! That's exactly how it sounds. Only when the engine is under strain though. I'll get it sorted asap. :ykt::ykt::thumbsup::thumbsup:

My old Granny used to do that m8 , was down to using unleaded with no additive  ...soon as i upgraded the fuel and added the additive it stopped doing it ( unless i really caned the old girl ! ) :D

If your compression is too high, or timing to advanced then it will pink.

Pinking is also known as knocking. You will hear it most at high revs or under load. If you can hear it without the knocking ear muffs then it is pretty bad.

We get 98 here. My 2l will pink on anything lower octane on the settings I have it.

It is really hardsh on bottom end and will/can also melt your pistons.

Had a fiddle with the dizzy tonight and cured it! Thanks a lot for your help. I didn't think it would be that easy to sort. I was ready to pay to get it rolling roaded! Once again this ace site saves me £££'s!:beer:
