With my limited knowlege i thought the atlas was more circular i aint got a clue really just something i read somwhere?

There was an axle guide in the Autumn 2006 classic ford, it covers all the various rear axle options.

 

Got it open in front of me and it looks to me like your axle could be a Koln axle, often mistaken for an Atlas axle because it has a rear loading diff. Unfortunately Fostek that wrote the article for classic ford aren't very complimentary about them saying they are weaker than a standard english axle. It also says because it's only 48.5" wide it's often confused with a baby atlas.

How to spot one: - The bolts holding the rear cover on will not be symmetrical. There's no lip around the centre section and it has a standard width of 48.5"

Look at the article mate, normally found on European spec mk1 and 2 escorts. It could be that your car was brought over to sell new here instead of there, or it could be that a past owner has mistaken it for an Atlas (common mistake as you've already seen) either way I'd be cautious about putting too much power through it.

 

Why not ring Fostek for advice? www.fostek.co.uk retro would probably be able to offer good advice too.
