tonymk2wagon Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 can anyone tell me if i need a one piece prop to fit my mk2 escort with a type 9? ive got the pinto fitted, mounts moved etc, cross member bolted up then went to put my rs 2000 prop on and its about 1 1/2 to 2" inches too long this is with the box spline pushed right up to which cant be good. is the single prop shorter? not got the spare cash to get it wrong again is the burtons one the best to go for?

aden Posted May 10, 2007 Report Posted May 10, 2007 mk2 rs props are 2 piece, type 9 5 speed and 4 speed rs boxes are exactly the same length, its just the x member mtg thats further back, ive had both boxes side by side when i put my car back together couple of mouths ago, i decided to put mine back with the 4 speed coz i couldnt be arsed with modifying the tunnel for the mounting, and because everyone advised my to keep the rs 4 speed

tonymk2wagon Posted May 10, 2007 Author Report Posted May 10, 2007 5 speed is basicly a 4 speed with a gear added to the back of the box inbetween case and tail section there fore 5 speed is longer. . . ive read up on this before but didnt realize it would affect it so much. . . or am i talking crap?

If it was why would people need to move the gear stick hole in the tunnel further back?
aden Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 5 speed hole is exactly the the same place as a 4 speed RS box, it is further back than a crossflow box which is why you cut the hole further back, rs boxes are same length as type 9, crossflow boxs are shorter

MK II Mark Posted May 11, 2007 Report Posted May 11, 2007 Tony, I'm doing the same conversion mate and have found out that cos the MK 2 estate is basically a MK 1 escort from the windscreen back that you can get a single piece prop from Peter LLoyd Rallying for about £120 and that if your fitting a type 9 5 speeder, you will need to move the gearbox mounts and the gearstick hole back. I'm waiting for a large gearbox tunnel and gonna do it that way. There should be a little bit of play where the prop slides in and out of the gearbox, not on the spline but back and forth to account for a bit of suspension movement. Thats how I see it but I'll stand corrected if anyone knows better Hope it helps bud
