LSD Noises

I fitted a new quaife atb lsd last week and have probably done about 20 miles with it. I've noticed that it makes different noises depending on whether you're accellerating, coasting or cornering.

 

According to the guy I got it from it was built 10 years ago with a brand new lsd and ring gear for a spare for his rally car and had never been fitted. It certainly was clean and there were no marks on it at all so I don't have any reason to doubt him.

 

The sounds on accelleration sound a bit like a straight cut box, on cornering it sounds like you're rubbing two dinner plates together.

 

Is this normal?

Its probably catching on the inside of the casing.. Dean at Salisbury told me about this before Quaife had to redesign it as it wasnt strictly thier design..

 

Pull it out and have a look for contact marks

 

If its catching on the CWP housing then "relive " ther area thats making contact

Cheers Gary. I'll check it out. But before I do, what is the best oil to use in a quaife LSD? I've got EP90 in.

I think you are meant to use a Extra pressure oil in the quaife diff, I thik Quaife sell their own for this diff

what sort of lock up was it built with.

 

my english axle was loaded up quite heavy and made all kinds of noises on tight cornering at low speeds on tarmac when grip was good. remember these friction plates are trying to limit the operation of the differential purpose.i.e one wheel revolving more than other as you corner.

 

noises are very normal from these but I suppose if you have not had one before the first experience can be concerning.

 

you must also recognize that I've not heard the diff so if the diff is F***ed then it will also wine because of that.

The Quaife ATB doesn't use clutch plates and according to Quaifes own catalogue it uses standard diff oil.

If I was you Mike I would give Quaife a bell just to put your mind at rest on 01732 741144.

I've found this on another forum

 

f ATB is fitted in a transmission where the oil is shared with the gears - then use the oil type recommended by the manufacturer of the unit.

 

If fitted in an axle, or if the rest of the 'transmission internals' are of Quaife origin - then use 75W90.

 

For Dog Engaged gearsets - 75W90 GL4/5

or

For Sychromesh gearsets - 75W90 GL4

 

They recommend/supply Silkolene as a preferred oil.

 

And somewhere else they say EP90 is ok, but it's better to use 75W90 as it gives reduced wear, increased economy and reduced noise.

 

I don't know what sort of lock up it was built with. I've never owned an OSF with an lsd so just needed to check if noises were normal. It actually only did the 'rubbing dinner plate' sound a couple of times at low speeds during 90 degree cornering.

If it not then its rubbed the casing away, to sorta self relive itself ..

 

Drop the oil thats in there, clean the casing at the bottom..

 

and refit, fill with fresh oil, either ep90 or the 75/90.

No, I was out in it last night and it didn't make the dinner plate noise. It's raining at the moment so I might go out for a quick sideways spin in it

Sounds like it's fooked...................You may as well through it in the bin...............tell you what, post it to me and I'll throw it in a secure skip at work where no one else can take it out from
