i have an unknown rack on mine, its defo not mk1 escort and i had a right game finding gaitors for it too.

poss mk2 i dont know?

Posted

it will fit the same but not sure about the track rod ends fiting as they are different size where the ball joint goes through the strut and the track rod itself is a different thread so you can not use the mk1 trackrod ends

Posted

so could you use a mk2 rack with mk2 RS track rod ends?

Although,I suppose that by the time you do that you may as well just buy a mk 1 rack

not sure about the rs track rod ends

i put mk2 struts on my mk1 and as a result had to convert the steering rack and track rod ends for the larger diameter holes on the struts

Mk 2 RS track rod ends have a the same size taper as all Mk1's. Thats why you need them to put capri legs onto a mk2 but not to put the same legs on a mk1.

Least, thats what I think

the rack will fit, but u need mk1 track rod ends, unless uve got mk2 front struts fitted. or if uve got rs or capri struts u need rs track rod ends. i think???

i got 2.0s Capri struts fitted...so i suppose i will have to fit RS track rod ends , yes :D

OK

Standard mk2 TREs are coded BLACK (i.e. metric thread and taper).

I think that the GREEN TREs are metric thread with imperial taper (i.e. Mk2 RS but im not 100%)

Mk1 racks have UNF threads for UNF TREs,

Mk2 racks (non RS) have metric threads for metric TREs,

Mk2 racks (RS) have metric threads for UNF TREs

basically the cast in steering arm type strut (mk2 non RS) have metric tapers, the all Mk1 and Mk2 RS have UNF tapers

A starting point would be to find out what struts you have and work backwards. Dont forget there are also long and short racks too....

Having done this on a mk1 donkeys ago...

To fit a mk2 rack you also need to fit mk2 struts. To fit mk2 struts you need to fit capri top mounts to the mk2 struts due to the mk1's larger hole in the inner wing.

That's all the info that i have but it is 100% fact, not hearsay, pub talk, wee boabs done it etc, i've done this myself.

Hope this clears this up a bit ?
