Pye Man Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 Who out there has learned to weld and paint themselves and applied this new found knowledge to their OSFs? Im interested in learning both, tho i am a little nervous. How hard is it and how long roughly does it take to learn to a good standard? Also any tips are welcome. Feed me with knowledge
4parajon Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 There's been a good feature on welding in CF over the last couple of months by Gary, that'll be a good start.
negri Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/ heres a guide to welding from the resto section if you have the space and can get a welder cheap enough go for it . get some scrap metal and practice . as long as you have the time to learn see if you can get some one local to let you watch them work and try to get a few tips of them .
Rick Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 painting yes welding no. its on the cards for when my cars done though., i just didnt wana make a pi gs ear of it

antz Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 im gonna start to learn to weld as soon as i cn get some scrap metal! all the scrappies near me shut down (the helpful ones anyway) and i have a welder sat in the kitchen. spraying i started to teach myself by spraying bumpers, rocker covers etc etc but then ran out of stuff to spray
lee_capri Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 use your neigbours cars then its ok and good pratice but dont let them catch you i hear jogging is good gor this thime of year if it stops raining
Gareth Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 All I can say is practice m8 Spraying is 90% prep work, if the surface isn't right the paint WILL show it up. It's happened to me and I nearly cried But once you've got the hang of it, everything becomes so much easier My Cortina needed sill repairs, lower 1/4's and floor repairs for the MOT. A couple of panels later and it's now 100% I'd recommend learning to anyone

ZetecVan 2.0 Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 im gonna start to learn to weld as soon as i cn get some scrap metal! You have - Your Volvo I need to practice my welding.I'm ok but could be a lot better.
mk3tina Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 yeah i taught myself how to weld, and ive been spraying stuff since i was about 11 years old (obviously crappy back then) and all that i know has gone into my capri, its also probably why my memory is buggered, all the paint fumes...........what were we talking about?
Tommy.C Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 i started to teach myself by spraying bumpers, rocker covers etc etc but then ran out of stuff to spray haha how addicting is painting whenever i go to paint a bracket or something small i always end up painting everything i can find!
Jarrodm Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 It's so much nicer doing it ya self ! You know that you've done a quality job, and you know an MOT faliure is only a few hours work Unless it's mechanical but thats not hard ! Painting a bit funny, i'm poo at it so i satin black everything untl i've saved enough for a pro job...............Did that with a beetle and never changed it ! So be quick, matt backs a path to the dark side !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Jarrod
emu Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 I sprayed my dads capri about 18 months ago. Was really pleasedwith how it turned out too. I figured it was worth the risk trying it, I think the paint cost about £75 so I could get it wrong a fair few times before it cost more than getting it done professionally. As for welding...........Some of longer standing members can probably tell you who my 'phone a friend' was However,as the only person capable of splodging a patch on a sill (even if it does look like I used albatross poo) I keep getting volunteered to weld up the MOT failures at work .luckily, my welding is much better now and its preferable to practise on someone elses car before I start adding bits to my car. In short, its well worth learning how to do both, you'll be suprised just how useful both skills can be. (And how much money you can save yourself)
surfingturnip Posted July 7, 2007 Report Posted July 7, 2007 im gonna start to learn to weld as soon as i cn get some scrap metal! all the scrappies near me shut down (the helpful ones anyway) and i have a welder sat in the kitchen. what happened to the one on Hummanby industrial estate?
