hi guys i just fitted a second hand head with an fr1 cam in it and i cant seem to get the car to stop pinking not all the time just when i accelerate from low revs in a high gear and if im crusing along in 4th or 5th barely over tickover in traffic the car dowsnt move smoothly at all it lurches forward erratcially

what do you think it might be people ??

i dont know much about the head other then its got standard valves etc i think it may have been skimmed a few times in its life tho as when cold my starter struggles to turn the engine over

The crank, the cam and the dizzy all have marks which need to line up. I haven't got a pic, but it'll be in the haynes manual ;)

Also, just thought have you got vac advance?

Also, what carb?

and when i put the new cam in i made sure it was all in the same position as when i took it off before i put the new hea don i set the bottom end to tdc and marked where all the pulleys were with a yellow pen thin tht i found in my mechanics tool box :P and then when i put it on i lined it all up where it was before ... but tbh i dunno ....

if its been skimmed a few times then that will raise compression ratio, meaning pinking is more likely.

try filling up with shell vpower or something else high octane, bp ultimate. see if that stops the pinking. the only other way to do it is to retard the ignition timing a couple of degrees (which should only be done with the use of a timing light). you could try turning the mixture screw on the carb a 1/4 of a turn out. if the idle is slow after the timing adjustment, youl have to screw in the speed screw a tiny bit to bring it back up.
