bashmk1 Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 whats the best way of taking the vinyl roof off a mk2 escort??? is it windows out? do i just make a cut in the middle of the roof and peel it off? absolutly any help or advise would be grateful. ash
johnny_h Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Find a crack or peel back a little bit and spray in carb cleaner. Wait a while and peel back some more slowly. More spray and when you peel back pull it right back at 90 degrees ie: flat away from itself.
Nettles Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Tare it off, rip it up and destroy the ugly thing and the give your roof some much deserved paint.
bashmk1 Posted July 11, 2007 Author Report Posted July 11, 2007 weird, everyone, and i mean everyone, has told me to keep it. i hate it though. so its definatly going. im also on the lookout for a roof rack please people!!!!!
Hunter T Posted July 11, 2007 Report Posted July 11, 2007 Very sharp paint scrapper and about 10 hours and bloody hard work...
Wessie Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 steve mk2 got rid of his vinyl roof, he took the windows out, im sure of it
atomic punk Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 Think you'll need to take the screens out as the vinyl is tucked under the lip IIRC
lee_capri Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 yeh you will have to take windows out the reason y people say keep vinyl roof is if you have removed one you will no y it can be a lot of work to get it sorted
antz Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 Tare it off, rip it up and destroy the ugly thing and the give your roof some much deserved paint. thats mean...i love my vinyl
Jay_harrier Posted July 12, 2007 Report Posted July 12, 2007 To do it properly the glass must come out as the vinyl is folded under into the inside & the rubbers trap it. The way I removed one was to take a knife, make a cut then just keep tearing until it's gone. Steve did his the same way but didn't have trouble with the glue. I did though, nothing would shift it, thinners, acetone, in the end I used paint stripper which is a savage way of doing it as any splashes will ruin good paint. Once it was off and the glue removed I took the glass out at the last possible minute & sealed/painted the whole lot in one go.

When I removed the vinyl I was shocked to see how much rust damage there was to the roof under the two stitched seems of the vinyl running the length of the roof. I was glad I found the rust when I did and since then I not really been a great fan of vinyl roofs.
