Had the mk2 Mot'd today, and it failed.... on the fact that the wipers don't self park thereby causing an obsruction of the drivers view.

wtf? its gone through the last 5 Mots like that

Anyone got a wiring diagram for self parking wipers please?

Mine don't self park either and I've never had any trouble come MOT time

Though it may be on modern cars, I'm pretty sure that on ours it's not so much a self park circuit as a self park motor. I can't really explain the workings of it, but if you remove the motor and strip it down and clean all the mechanisms, it may work again.

sorry to hear that mate but nowhere in the mot manual does it say they have to self park, the garage must only do modern cars not used to osf  go back & ask him to show you in the testers manual where it says self park, they can fail for stopping in the middle of the screen, but that is usualy single wiper conversions,if the wipers work when switched on and stop when switched off they will pass common sense would see if they would stop in the normal position (bottom of screen)

As above and if he doesn't write a ticket out tell him you will be appealing, its your right, use it !!

Does seem very petty that decision, I could understand it if they were'nt working or appeared to be on there last legs.

When I turn my wipers off on the Capri they stop give or take 3" up or down the windscreen.

Its the same garage that I've always used, the same guy has tested my car for 5 years or more.... they know the car well and are not normally this petty. Which is why I got confused. The guy said that it was quite a new thing and it was daft - what about cars and lorries with split screens???

I'm going to try and see if there's an easy fix today (its annoying not having self parking wipers anyway) - if theres not I'll kick up a fuss :ykt:

I used to use the same Ford Main garage to do all my servicing and mot's on all my 3 cars which over the years was a lot of money

Any way took my Mk3 Mondeo Ghia X there for a mot

and they failed it on headlights to low.......so i said theres a dial on the dash to raise the lights he said we can't do that thats your job!

and they failed it on emitions...they said it was cutting out all the time

which i said was a load of the round ones as i'm in the car all the time

and it's never cut out

So i took it to another Ford garage the same day to do a test on the emitions and it passed all stages...........

Guess what they don't do any more of my services or mot's any more

quite a lot of MOT places are being checked out now and have to be petty otherwise the garage could get closed, i was readin the last MOT on the capri, failed on a small hole "smaller than a 5p" it said and "rear fog light dash warning light" i asked the guy and if failed because the little light on the dash didnt light up when you pressed the button...

OK, I've been doing a bit of phoning around, it seems that this is open to some interpretation. It doesn't actually say anywhere in the manual that wipers must self park. However, there is a section under windscreens that says 'no stickers OR OTHER OBSTRUCTIONS within zone A' and thats the technicality.

Some garages will fail it on this issue regardless of whether its a 1902 Benz or a 2002... others will pass so long as the wipers can be stopped at the bottom, rather than self parking in the middle... none I spoke to would pass it through on the nod.

Ever since this computerised MOT thing came in it seems thar everything has to be done to the letter

Lastly, all versions of the mk2 had self parking wipers according to a Ford technician I spoke to.....which doesnt exactly help....

he rules aren't open to interpretation at all. Every time a major new rule has come in it only applies to vehicles maunfactured after that date.

That's why our old fords don't allways need things like seatbelts, mirrors, fog lights, hazards etc.

You turn the wipers off at the bottom - no obtruction.

JMTPW of course ;)

just one idea check all the connections on the wiper motor are on correctly and clean and tight as sometimes one of mine fell off and caused the wipers not to stop on return but where they were

It aint a new rule, this ones been in place donkeys.....

Just been on the blower again and guess what, the inspectors are due in any day  so despite me arguing all of the above (I mean, what about split screen campervans would they fail??) it seems that rules are coming before common sense once again :evil::evil:

Trouble is, I need the car MOTd to get a new tax disc, and as I'm off on holiday on Monday it needs to be MOT'd by then, and I'm buggered if I'm paying another £50 to get it tested elsewhere.:twisted:

BTW, what does JMTPW mean

Did that today, I've had all the motor apart, cleaned up all the brushes and terminals, checked the tightness of the linkages, used plenty of WD40, even tried bypassing the earth on the motor and no joy....

Thats just shit mate! Dunno if anybody feels the same on here but I'm well pissed with all these do gooders and rule makers!

WOT HAPPENED TO GREAT BRITAIN !

Bit deep I know but a man can only take so much !

call me stupid if you like but if this is all it failed on and to save all the hassle , just take it to another garage and get it done there ,or tell your usual garage that is what you are going to do and if still no joy then he looses a valuable customer, his loss!!!! your gain!!!
