cossieglen Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 Which is why I'm picking up a lovely shiny full race head and cam from Ron Snr on Friday
Fiesta Steve Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 £100 for diesel rods Someone had a rake of these engines and asked if I wanted them, I told him to scrap em, lol. Why not just use the x-flow rod ?? Surely much cheaper and easier to get hold of ?
Admin Vista Posted August 22, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 22, 2007 Why not just use the x-flow rod ?? Surely much cheaper and easier to get hold of ? Good question that, and not knowing much about X-flows I don't know the answer though if it was possible I'm sure it would have been done already and public knowledge. It's probably something to do with piston fit or rod length. Oh and ironically that's why they go for a few quid, the engines pretty long in the tooth now and so there aren't many around as most of them got chucked as useless scrap.
Fiesta Steve Posted August 22, 2007 Report Posted August 22, 2007 How long does the rod need to be ? Pinto has 5" rods, Crossflow are 4.9"
Fiesta Steve Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Are diesel rods forged, like the YB rod ?
BIG G Posted August 23, 2007 Author Report Posted August 23, 2007 yeah steve forged and smaller big end allowing the crank to be off center ground to stroke it hey prest 2.2
Fiesta Steve Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 yeah steve forged and smaller big end allowing the crank to be off center ground to stroke it hey prest 2.2 Cheers m8 Do you or anyone else know the length of the diesel rod ? ( I know its shorter than a Pinto rod )
cossieglen Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 My accralite forged pistons come with too much meat on for the sake of difference in rod length. I'm not sure if the small end diameter is the same on the diesel rod as the cossie rod, but might be worth finding out if accralite do a 93mm piston to suit one of those rods? Or do you use the standard 90.8mm pistons and literally just stroke it to 2.2? Either way, I think if you want those revs (8000rpm) then you're probably going to need forged pistons anyway? I'm no expert, but I'm not sure the gas flow on anything less than a full race head will allow those kind of revs will it? In which case the compression will be higher and therefore cast pistons will probably go wrong.
Admin Vista Posted August 24, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 24, 2007 You do need larger pistons too, I used 92mm accralite pistons in mine, but the point in a stroked 2.2 is that you have so much more grunt that you don't need massive amounts of revs. For instance, I have 140bhp at 4000rpm and 190 at 6000rpm
cossieglen Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Gotcha, was having a good chat about this today with Ron Harris Sr when I picked my head up from him. He also said you can stroke out using a crossflow rod, but the revs would have to be capped to about 7250 in order to avoid any nasty failures.

Standard x-flow rods are good for 8500 rpm in a crossflow, as proven by me ! and thats with a heavy cast piston hanging off the end of it. and they've had some metal removed !!
lee 1 Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 the diesel rod's are 3.2mm longer than pinto rods as stated in the how to power tune sohc pinto book.I have just checked a diesel rod against a standard pinto rod and it is definately longer not shorter.

cossieglen Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Crikey steve! Nice one! just goes to show how bomb proof that old kent lump is eh?! If the diesel rod is that much longer, it might match the length of the cossie rod?
Guest MK1gaz Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 I had x-flow rods in my old stroked crank Harris pinto + Darran Moss has them in his H.T. racing Pinto . A stroked crank (offset ground) pinto is a fair bit gruntier than a 2.1 version and you can rev them at 7500-8000 rpm no probs BUT you must have proper pistons (Accralite etc) as the ring lands will collapse on the cast V6 pistons . A stroked pinto is best used as a grunt fest and not a screamer as the head won't flow enough air for 8000+ rpm antics so best just change up a gear and surf the torque wave . This is why they are sooooooo fast , a big fat grunty power band to fall into . You can buy proper steel rods for this conversion but they are approx £175 each where as the X-flow + 1600 diesil rods are cheap . I know you all know who can build good fast ones , he's 73 , a legend and above all , a flipping nice geezer , sir Ron Harris you are the man

Guest MK1gaz Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 Here's a pic of a stroked crank (offset ground) , x-flow rodded Harris pinto . 185 bhp on 45's and points
cossieglen Posted August 25, 2007 Report Posted August 25, 2007 FFS Darren, you would say that now that it's wrapped in about 5 layers of brown paper covered in rust prevention lubricant, and another 4 layers of bubble wrap so I can't bloody photograph the thing!!!
BIG G Posted August 27, 2007 Author Report Posted August 27, 2007 pickin the block up today in the golf so look out for a wheelying gti mk1 on the south coast
