cossiematt Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 I've just had a car hpi checked that i was considering buying and its come back as a total loss back in the mid 80's. Its a 30 year old car and is obviously in good nick now but its put me off slightly Basically i would've bought it had it come back straight, would it bother anyone else?
antz Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 its 30 years old and i bet everything that old has a bit of a sketchy history i bought my car with only 5 years of history and absolutely no hpi check. if it trailed off in the 80s then its still nearly 20 years ago.is it worth losing the car over a bit of a sketchy past that prob wont affect it now?
flyingbanana Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 depends what was classed has a total loss....my dads mk1 cortina was written off because it was rolled and got a dented wing....which is repairable...so all depends on the damage and how much to repair
emu Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 If it was written off in the mid 80's and its still around in good condition now then I would guess that a pretty good job was done repairing it. I would say that if your happy enough with the car apart from that bit of its history then go for it
Admin Vista Posted August 20, 2007 Admin Report Posted August 20, 2007 Tough question to answer as I guess it's all dependent on what you're buying, for instance If I was out looking for a near new top of the range modern car, say an M3 or a Merc / Audi of some kind, then yes I'd run a mile as there's plenty more to choose from However with a classic Ford, the choice of good ones is so limited, that if it's been repaired properly and to the right specification then I'd probably overlook it. Though I'd scrutinise it thoroughly for any discrepancies, for instance if it was reshelled was the shell that was used, a) the right spec & Not stolen?
mk1mexico Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 Also you have to consider the day when you try and sell it
aden Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 thing is im not sure whats worse? a well repaired damaged car or a welded up rot box that wouldnt show up on any hpi check? just a thought
cossiematt Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 its an old skool ford, an RS. So if I bought it then the person buying it from me in a few years time will probably be in the same mixed state of mind as me
marky4 Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 if the car is in good nick i would go for it when i brought mine i didn't have much history pre mid 90's but since found out alot more from the dvla
Arched Escy Posted August 20, 2007 Report Posted August 20, 2007 i have 36000 miles worth of receipts and mot certificates and thats all....i wouldnt be worried unless it was an rs1600 or summat
cossiematt Posted August 20, 2007 Author Report Posted August 20, 2007 I hate having to make decisions like this, wanted an old skool escort for years and years and now i have the opportunity a spanner gets thrown right in there!
