ratfink Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 I want to lower the front of my Granada and the only springs you can but are a set of 4 for £120 which is £100 to expensive. Some people are telling me cutting coils is fine others are telling me not to do it. Its a 2ltr hearse so i'm hardly going to be throwing it into corners!
james p Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 citting springs isnt ideal as they arnt as stiff as lowering springs also they dont ever sit right on spring cups
thefatcapri Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 citting springs isnt ideal as they arnt as stiff as lowering springs also they dont ever sit right on spring cups ...and if the springs don't stay in their cups when the car's jacked up it can be an MOT failure if the tester's being picky
Fiesta Steve Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 The ride gets bouncy because they get stiffer. The more you cut off the stiffer they get. The bouncing is usually caused by the use of stanard shocks that arn't upto the job. Lets face it, if your cutting springs you probably haven't got a set of race shocks fitted.

baz105e Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 if the mot tester notices that the spring had been cut wether falling out of the cup or not its an instant fail so all i can suggest is do a good job if you reallt have to do it
ratfink Posted August 23, 2007 Author Report Posted August 23, 2007 All the 1950's cars done as Kustoms have cut coils as there is no other option....hmmm i may get a spare set of springs and try it.
ratfink Posted August 23, 2007 Author Report Posted August 23, 2007 The other options heat the coils but I can't see that being easy to get both sides even.
Burns Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 or look somewhere else for the springs? i know that fiesta springs vary from £100 a set, to £50 from the fiesta center
Fiesta Steve Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Rally Design, all springs £12.50 +vat
ashleys dad Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 cutting springs is a BODGE JOB and an mot failure DO NOT do it
antz Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 DO NOT CUT THE SPRINGS! if you cut it and something bad happens then youll be wishing you spent the £120 on proper springs than doing a bidge job
Richierich Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 Cuttings not a great idea! But then with the escort for example the -2" are too short anyway so do they not need wiring in or risk mot failure?
Mrs O/H/C Posted August 23, 2007 Report Posted August 23, 2007 mr lead foot and i have had many cars with cut springs if you are only cutting a coil and a half out its not too bad and then wire them in.That was the only way years ago as you could not buy lowered springs. only 1 of our cars failed because they were heated rather than cut. )
ratfink Posted August 24, 2007 Author Report Posted August 24, 2007 Rally Design, all springs £12.50 +vat Do they do Granada then? They list everything but on the website.

I'm going to talk to UK kustoms i think and see what they say. You can't buy lowering springs for PA Crestas and Austin Cambridges and all their cars are in the weeds! Surely if I only lower the front its going to handle like crap any way??? Next step flame throwers.....
Fiesta Steve Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Rally Design, all springs £12.50 +vat Do they do Granada then? They list everything but on the website. They may not list them as 'Grananda' springs but a spring is a spring. Decide what lenght you want and with poundage you want and select a spring from the list. Give them a call and double check that the diameter fit your application and hey presto
johnny_h Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 Grinder action! Oldskool favorite and cheaper than a £400 set of coilovers
hotrodholty Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 dont cut them, bad news. there is a place in sheffield where you send your springs they measure the hieght and rate of them standard then give you a call. you send them a cheque and your requirements and they custom build them for peanuts, but i cant remember the name, sheffield springs? might be worth a call.
baz105e Posted August 24, 2007 Report Posted August 24, 2007 I think it's clear to see who r the bodgers of the bunch
