Leading on from the What should I do thread...

Which Escorts are the least desirable?

Is it a Mk1 4 door or a Mk2 4 door?

And why do some escort Mk2's have square lights and some round, are the square ones the later ones?

I'm asking this because I want a saloon Escort but dont care which. 8)

Or is it easyer to get hold of a Cortina?

Sorry I have to be spoon fed OSF knowledge...

Cheers people

P.S. No offence to estates.

The truth is all escorts are desirable, some a lot and some even more. As a general rule of thumb (based purely on what they sell for) I'd say 2 doors are most desirable and mk1's more than mk2's (though with the excpetion of the RS models there isn't a lot in it and much of the choice is down to personal taste)

Lights wise, all early mk1's were rectangular, round was introduced in about 1970 (exact date escapes me) but the 1300E stayed rectangular till the end of production

Mk2 lights you'll need to get details from someone else, but all RS models were round, the RS2000's were predominantly droop snoot with quad round lamps.

all mk2 sports mexicos etc were round head light as were some lower modles like 1.1 or 1.3 popular but then some populars were square

you know what ford are like use all the spare parts

not so sure on mk1s but i prefer round head lights on both

cortinas will be cheaper

you mean some cortinas are cheaper, lotus cortina mk1s sell for between £15000 and £150,000

good 2 door gts are going for £10000-£15000

a good 4 door gt mk1 can sell for £6000-8000

Round headlights work much better than the square or rectangular ones, the works drivers complained about the early rally cars having to have the rectangular lights in the mk1's as they were fitted on the higher spec cars so ford wanted them on the RS's as well.

round lights came in sealed beam (pants) or H4 types as well, the H4 has a changeable bulb and the glass is flat so you get more light and better beam pattern (and you can fit higher wattage bulbs for off road use only of course)

2 doors are more desirable than the 4 doors as they tend to look smoother and the race car variants tend to be 2 door as the shell is generally more rigid and lighter with less holes in it.

Cant see this changing any time soon although prices of 4 doors are rising at the same pace as 2 doors now as the supply of cheapish escorts seems to be drying up.

Cortina's seem to be about the cheapest old school ford at the mo although obviously prices vary depending on models, mk5's are cheapest and mk2's seem to be reasonably priced still.

Capri's are still not expensive as they carried on makig them for years, early ones are expensive though.

Granada prices are climbing, driven up by the banger boys using up large supplies of them.

You have to decide on your budget, and how much work you are prepared to do on your car and then see what you can afford really, or choose your car and hunt around for one in your budget.
