bashmk1 Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 had a rover come in at work the other day for headgasket(surprise surprise) the owner told us it was smoking quite a bit on the drive over and the bloke behind put his fog lights on. we thought he was over reacting somewhat. turns out he wasnt...
Guest V6MAT Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 surprised the fire brigade werent called
Mr Sam Posted October 19, 2006 Report Posted October 19, 2006 i saw some astra in the middle of leicester once producing smoke like this............just like one of the red arrows
bashmk1 Posted October 19, 2006 Author Report Posted October 19, 2006 burning a bit of oil was he? its white smoke jim, burning water.
Pipster007 Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 I always thought Rovers were steam driven and you have to shovel in the coal.
RFChris Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Well, as an ex-rover employee i can safeley say that an MGF producing that much steam realisticly means "new engine". You could do a head gasket, but the block'll be so full of emulsified crap that the head will go again. Fookin awful cars....still, quite amusing! Chris
mk1mexico Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Nightmare to do a headgasket on one of them too

Chris chris, your definatly a main dealer. they just replace the world. its fine bud, was absolutly full of the oil and water mix(my teacher always said those two could never ever mix!)we have a special fluid that goes in and clears the system. weve done it loads and never had any come backs. i do love roadtesting these cars tho, people just dont know what to do!
Dom Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Is it a 1.8 K series? My brothers got a 51 plate elise with about 60k on the clock. So far its had the head gasket, brand new cylinder head, rebuilt gearbox, new rear suspension and all the brakes replaced. I blame rover even for the brakes and suspension lol
bashmk1 Posted October 20, 2006 Author Report Posted October 20, 2006 tis indeed the k16 bud. absoutly shocking engines, although surprisingly good bottom ends. i think weve done 3 k16's this week alone. funny how the elise is so unreliable, you should expect a headgasket once a year, but brakes and suspesion is all lotus and usually very good. they do say lotus stands for 'Lots Of Trouble Usually Serious' tho.

Admin Vista Posted October 20, 2006 Admin Report Posted October 20, 2006 Me and my brother must have been lucky then, I had an MGF VVC for three years and drove it bloody hard the whole time. Meanwhile my brother has a Trophy and treats it similarly. To date not a hiccup between the 2 cars (though I don't have mine anymore) and contrary to popular belief if driven properly the MGF is a great handling little car.
bashmk1 Posted October 20, 2006 Author Report Posted October 20, 2006 your were a very lucky man then. as for the car itself, pretty much one of the worst cars ever, pedals too close, steering wheel too low. dont think the handling is great(maybe the suspension needed pumping up ) but when i gave it some the engine didnt sound bad, wouldbe sounded gorgeous on throttle bodies with a straight cut box, but its still in an mg. rather have a bike.
RFChris Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 Fooking awful car. I mean...honsetly, what a hunk o shite. Bash....crash it, tell the owner it got stolen. Its the best thing for it in the long run. Chris

Chris pmsl, your right they trully are awful cars! i cant crash it, i want my money. plus if i let it go out, i wont see it again next year for headgasket. the K16, the best thing ever to happen to the motor trade.

I'll grant your the steering wheel, but not the pedals, I have pretty large feet and never had a problem with them, besides, Worst car ever?? That's a little strong and personally I Don't think so, there's plenty to take that title long before the MGF. To name but a few............ Austin Allegro Austin Princess Austin Maestro (Are we detecting a theme here?) AMC Pacer Ford Mustang mk3 Ford "I've been smacked by a wet fish" Scorpio Ford Probe (Capri mk4 my ass!) Edsel Vauxhall Viva Vauxhall Cavalier Mk1 Peugeot 309 Any old Skoda / Ladaor anything else eastern block Renault 12 Renault 4 Need I go on?
RFChris Posted October 20, 2006 Report Posted October 20, 2006 the K16, the best thing ever to happen to the motorrepair trade. I used to have to sell the bastards.....

Admin Vista Posted October 20, 2006 Admin Report Posted October 20, 2006 Lol, you're the same age as me an I've driven nearly all of them (apart from the awful, fook me a corner I think I'll crash, yank ones). Honestly the MGF I had was the most reliable car I've ever owned it never let me down once, the Mercedes I replaced it with on the other hand was a complete hunk of junk that cost me nearly £3000 in repairs in 2 1/2 years. Just goes to show it's more about luck than anything else.
bashmk1 Posted October 20, 2006 Author Report Posted October 20, 2006 im only 21. no idea why it says 36.
