tim Posted September 9, 2007 Report Posted September 9, 2007 just think where the flywheel is in an escort right next 2 your feet
V8ian Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 One Good reason to get a STEEL flywheel, I have after finding some real dodgey stress cracks in my old flywheel, I also run a special clutch with a mailable pressure plate, One old Faomous Drag Racer, Don Garlits lost half his foot due to exploding flywheel, the outcome of that was Steel or Titanium clutch cans and laterly kevlar blankets. I have seen 2 flywheel/clutch explosions one was my cousen with a big block 63 corvette, reving the engine in the garage, not particularly hard either, the flywheel let go, thru the car, bonnet, inner and outer wings and wedged its self into the garage door, and the Other one was Rons Blue Escort, at the weald, I think it was Martin driving it, and the pressure plate exited thru the bonnet. whoops,
LEONMEX Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 I had a flywheel shatter in a mk2 granada at mildenhall in a banger & it went through a cast bellhousing, through the tunnel & nearly got through a steel water tank in the bulkhead where it got stuck. Lucky it did'nt come out the other side through my legs Ive got a steel flywheel in my escort needless to say
over_head_cam Posted September 10, 2007 Report Posted September 10, 2007 That's mental. I've just read the post on that other site but I can't work out what the Civic was doing 150 feet in theair
X-pack-Glyn Posted September 11, 2007 Report Posted September 11, 2007 Years ago i see pics of a mini one that let go, the flywheel sits right in line with the driver and a chunk went through the bulkhead and came into the cab, it then proceeded to pass through the base of the drivers seat just below his the round ones.... i think someone was watching over him that day... be carefull kids when lightening cast flywheels eh, thats why i payed my money for a steel one.
Messenjah Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 REALLY woried now lol my ne wengine has a lightened flywheel and on its first trip out all the bolts came undone and one of them snapped dont them back up and put locktite on the threads but should i swap back to the old flywheel ?
baz105e Posted September 12, 2007 Report Posted September 12, 2007 depends wether you want people to call you stumpy or not but i think flywheel explosions are as has already been said due to fatigue in the structure its self. possibly get it helicoiled ??? but i'd say sort it sooner rather than later dude
