Ok so the engine is back in and running, I had to add a little "bit" whilst it was appart so it will be interesting to see if it's made any difference to the performance.

 

I had a real stroke of luck with the whole car though recently......

 

I had tried to book it in for a little freshen up in the paint department as there are a few bits which are spoiling due the damp in my garage.

 

The painter guy came over to look at it (as the engine was out) and I tried to persude him to do it whilst I did the engine and so it could look it's best for Brighton Speed Trials on the 13th September.

 

He declined to do it this side of the Trials saying he wouldn't have it done in time with his work load etc etc....

 

I spoke to him the other day and guess what!?

 

His workshop has burnt to the ground - with customers cars in it!

 

Poor bloke sounded absoluttely gutted. He loves the cars he paints and puts real care into his work. I know it seems wrong to be pleased but I am SO relieved mine wasn't in the fire!!

I like the gear changes, I don't know if you get Retro Ford magazine, but it ran in the 4 second 0-60 bracket all day with a best of 4.7 sec 0-60 on road tyres on the slippery Brunters surface. It makes me wonder what the 0-60 time would be at Pod as my 1/4 mile time was 0.8 seconds slower.

 

Imagine an old Cortina with a pre-crossflow installed running in the 3 second bracket to 60? Hard to believe possible but it makes you think!

 

Something for me to aim for!

yup your pore crossflow sounds the dogs danglies. irst time i heard was i think at wheels day? or some kind of nsra nats when i was 10 i think.correct me if im worng!

 

6 years or so later and i see it at the classic ford show sounding even better and going quicker!brilliant sensei toby !

Yes mate a self made straight cut dog box, which is probably why it's so noisey!

 

I can't really help on the manifold price though, I got mine with my original cortina 18 or so years ago, got to be worth £40 minimum haven't they? I think Burton list them new, and 105-speed make a 1 piece one, but they're IRO £100 new I think.

 

Incidentally I think they're all for 40's and you have to port them for the bigger carbs.

Latest work in progress....

 

Further to problems at the rolling road, with masses of power missing on slow power climbs and disappointing terminal speeds at Brighton, I checked valve lifts to ensure the cam was ok and not missing a lobe. So fairly sure there was nothing wrong with the engine I removed the exhaust at HT's on the dyno day and there was the missing HP.

 

This weekend I removed the system and came up with a way to test it given that I can't see through it, despite the fact it's supposed to be straight through, because of the bends in the system.

 

I found a squash ball in my loft which is about 1.5" in diameter and tried to roll it through the pipe. It wouldn't come out the otherside of either my front or rear box.

 

This is obviously what is killing it's performance with the system on. I am hoping it will drive like it does at Pod with the system on after it is replaced.

 

I have read loads of stuff and am hoping I can come up with a system that works as well as an open header although I am expecting a small loss....

 

We are going to cut the old system open to see what is wrong inside

That looks really interesting - i doubt my friends will thank you though!! I just can't wait to send them to sleep. I will have a good look at that.

 

My sytem is actually already made and I am pretty sure it's infinately better than it was, however, I think it still dosn't feel as fast as an open header, but that could just be down to the lack of noise and bleeding ears!!

I believe there are 2 period dark greens - Goodwood and Alpina. My paint code is CM-A (Alpina green) if that helps.

 

There is an imaculate 4 door on the concours scene - he says his is Alpina Green - I stated his looked lighter than mine and he just repeated "mine is Alpina green" - so who knows!!

 

I believe Goodwood green to be a little lighter than Alpina, but I'm no bufty!! (Although there may be 2 Alpina Greens)

A little up-date....

 

At the end of last season my gearbox enababled me to back up my 12.58 with a 12.59 (Close enough! ) however it was getting noisey

 

A more mechanically sympathetic person might have thought it was time for some maintenance, but oh no! I knew better!!

 

The result was LOTS of teeth falling off my home made main shaft gears. The lay shaft gears seemed to be chewed but hadn't fallen off.

 

Not being a gear engineer I had made the gears from some die-casting tool steel which we had lying around at work. I had hardened the lay gears but hardened and nitrided the main shaft gears. The nitriding puts a rock hard case on the steel. This combination gives a "smartie" affect with the inner steel being quite tough and the shell being hard wearing. My thoughts now are that when the shallow hard shell distorted by the soft choclate centre squashing, the surface then cracked enabling cracks to propogate through the teeth untill one left home. Once one had had enough the rest of the pack of cards fell over too!

So, back to the drawing board I decided to take the "opportunity" to make a 5 speed.

 

I spent ages drawing the box, spent ages researching gear steels and hardening proceedures, pressure angles, hardness depths etc.

 

The steel was ordered 2 months ago and I have spent EVERY spare minute of every day / weekend working on it, sometimes till 3 in the morning.

 

The result went to the hardeners yesterday. It should be back on Wednesday next week. I then have to get it together and in the car over the weekend to be ready for Brighton the following weekend (the 12th)

 

The rush isn't over yet.

 

The thing might not work.

 

But! I am pleased with the look of the bits!
