Some of the competition head gaskets such as Felpro are thinner than the standard head gasket which has the effect of increasing the compression ratio and also improving squish(piston closer to the head at TDC) which helps prevent the engine from detonation.

I had a chat about this with my engine builder as my engine was built up.

His answer was yes you can get competition head gaskets, but that for what they cost over standard ones they aren't worth the money.

In fact he went on to describe them as one of the best cases of over & unneccesary engineering (in order to persuade a customer to part with extra money that he doens't need too) that is available on the market today.

I took him at his word as he has a long established reputation as a builder of race winning engines.

I agree with Vista on this one, the standard head gasket is the best gasket unless you are running very wild spec.

I also chose a £5 standard head gasket and with over 150 bhp in my x-flow its been fine for many years
