Heres one for you...

 

in my garage ive got 16 pinto cam pulleys, so as you do i checked to so how the cam teeth measure out in relation to the key way...the variation amongst all of em is shocking, i only managed to find 3 that matched, thats right, 3!!! they vary so much that it kind of deletes the need for a vernier really... the biggest variations are exactly half a tooth out!

 

out of all these pulleys i know ive got 10 degrees of adjustment either way.

 

one to think about dont you think.

 

i also notice how these verniers seem to be a bit of a fashion accesory, you see em all the time set at the factory position, of course some wont need adjutment to get the correct high lift point, but most of em i see havent been altered at all :roll:

How do you know they are in the factory position?

When i fitted a turbosport one and a burton one (cos the TS one bent :evil: ) on both the central marker on the lines was not the standard position :? which TBH i thought was a bloody stupid idea, why have a central mark if it's not the standard setting ? confused the hell out of me when i first fitted it and the car ran like a bagOshite :(

 

I know what you meen about standard build quality though :roll: i do find the later 205's have a much higher standard of built quality than the early stuff, almost like they where built in different centurys :lol:

 

Back in the day the vairiation in manufacturing was the vernia pully, measure the one you need and fit that to get timing spot on, just measure em and mark how many degs they are out and what way (adv or ret), keep em in a box and swap em about on the RR :thumbsup:

like i said back in the day the "out" ones would be kept and marked to dial in hot cams, i guess when ford started to get better at making em all the same (IF EVER :lol: ) vernias where needed ?

TBH the quality of "certain" vernias is so crap i'd rather spend the time measuring a standard one to find the correct timing so i'm with you on the "why do we need vernias" :mrgreen:

I had to use the bolt to pull the burton one on the cam god knows how i'll ever get it back off :shock: as for the other one, well put it this way, i weighed it in for 34p in scrap :twisted:

If paying for rolling road time it's quicker to adjust cam timing with a vernier wheel than changing complete wheels over . Fine tuning the cam timing on a rolling road can get you 5+ bhp and at £70 an hour you need to work fast :thumbsup:

Thats the beauty of the vernier, to optimise the cam timing for your set of components.

If you have a modified head and cam then its a must as it makes quite a difference - you can also play about to get a differnt feel to the engine, ie more torque lower down.

erm not trying too be rude but he is saying he can adjust the timing without using a vernier because his standard ones are so ridiculously out on timing he has like 5degrees variation advance and retard. by just swapping the standard cams over.
