Hi all im new here. Ive just sold my Concourse Series 1 Rs turbo after a 4 year restoration. Now i have a 1949 beetle and Mk1 Escort to restore.

The escort it a 1968 1300 super 2door. It needs new wings, front valence, and new rear arch inserts. The floor is almost 95% solid!!

Many people do not like my approach to cars....let me explain. To me the fun is in working on them. So i tend to buy a car restore it, drive it for 6 months then sell it, to buy another. Good thing doing this i can own all the cars ive wanted, (well nearly!), but its also painful to let pass them on, when i let my heart rule and buy another project. You get the idea...!

Any way im unsure what to do with this Mk1, My first thoughts are as it needs the above pannels, i plan to fit mexico wings front and rear

(not bubbles tho, as i feel you need a multi tonal spray job and a striped/roll cage interior. In otherwords a track car!)

And round headlights.

The chap i bought it from was going to transplant a mk2 capri 2.0L engine/gbox and front suspension. Im quite keen on this as it would offer sufficient power and be realitivly easy & cheap it do!

Ive toyed with the idea of Zetecs and cossie lumps but then im looking at £1000 to £3000 respectivly, to do this.

Basically i'd like the car to look like the white mexico on this home page, with the capri running gear!

Or do i just restore it back to its formar glory, with the strange green.turquoise paint and lovley turquoise vinal interior, and 1.3!

Obviously my main concern is to make the car valuable and also appeal to a wide target audience.

Please help and be honest as im looking to start welding it next week after its been sandblasted.

Hello and Welcome to the site - you can go mad if you wish but then a nice simple resto is just as satisfying.........................

the round ones - Arch It Link it Drive it like you stole it - best thing you ever did selling them front wheel drive escorts mate - check out my resto thread to see how to do a major ( and I do mean Major resto) on a budget of £46.99

Enjoy the site - also have a look at Retro Als Resto thread and I promise your mind will know which way to go

Go with the Capri setup. Don;t worry too much about value either. If you get it mint it'll be worth its weight in gold. With all the MKI's there are always as many people who love the standard look as there are who love the non-standard pinto lump!

Either way is a winner!

Personally though....i'd go with Kevs suggestion! :ykt:

Im glad i found this site, i began asking for ideas on Alcoholics Anonymous, but that was a waste of time. I get the feeling many of them are not even oldenough to drive and are just telling me what they would do it was their dream car. When ive specifically stated my intentions to sell it in the next year and only want to know what is best for the car not my heart!

Anyway rant over. Well ive worked out it will cost about £400 to do the capri engine, gbox and supsension conversion. Not bad could have done it for less if id a bought a donner car, but i have 2 landrovers, mk4 golf gti, rs turbo s1, 1949 beetle, Aston martin dbs and of course the mk1 escort, so i cant be dealing with another lump of metal to trip over!

Like i said zetec and cossie are out of the question, just too much expence for the amount of work, especially as im not keeping the car.

Anyway please keep the comments coming as im still waiting to get it sandblasted so nothings set in stone!

As for front wheel drive, yes rwd in much more dangerous and fun, but i will miss the torque steer when the boost kicks in. See failed to reach the reserve, as the people who were interested wanted to view it first, why they left it untill the last hour, i dont know, they had a whole 10days to view it. Anyway i have a gentelemans sale aggrement so it should be gone saturday. Here is the ebay link so you can get an idea of the quality of my work, all by my own hand, welding, spraying, mechanics. Bought it as a 40% rotten shell and box of bits for £600, prob spent another £1500

for parts, sold for £4500 (well hopefully). Anyway take a look, let me know if you like it. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll? ... %3AIT&rd=1

That beetle is gonna look lovely when done m8 :D

As for the mk1, sounds like a good idea using capri bits, change it all over in one go, the thing that will retain the value on any old ford now is the bodywork, get the rot chopped out and make the shell looking lovely and solid and regardless of engine etc someone will always want it :D

as everyone has said. a good solid 2 door escort you will never lose money on. especially if you restore it as good as the RS. why dont you go for a warm pinto or crossflow for the project, wont cost the earth and it will be more than enough for the escort.

ive owned the white mex on the cover so if you wanna know anything just ask bud.

mk1 looks nice in the photo, and jesus is that beetle low!!!

Hi glad you like my projects. The chap who is buying the S1 on saturday is a very lucky man. I should really have put it in storage, it would be worth a fortune in 10 years time. But as you know she has to go to fund the next project, as i said the mk1 will probably be up for sale when finished, it may even be up for grabs around xmas time if i pull my finger out! Reason being the 1949 beetle is eating up money fast, i.e just the rear view mirror cost £350 and it needed restoring!

As for its stance/ about 3/8" from the ground, with no adverse camber changes,..... well thats TOP SECRET, if people knew how i did that then they'd all be copying me. They're 17" wheels as well tyreds are 215 wide!!! Thing its not staying that way, modified like that it would be worth about £6k, but in original condition itsa almost knocking on the door of £20k. So sorry this rides not going to be phat!

Anyway as for the Mk1, yes as you know the white mex on home page i think is my target. I just need to know how hard it is to get a mex interior, or similar. If its possible im going to make it look like a full on mex replica then maby as you say use a 1.6 xflow or even keep the 1.3 xflow. This would then be an ideal project for someone with big engine plans, or an ideal first car, mex looks with a cheap to run engine and insurance!?

Please let me know about interiors? ie cost, difficulty in finding

That particular one had Mk1 RS roll-top trim, which is both rare as hens teeth and more expensive than a top class hooker (so i'm told)

Try Roy nunn, he'll no doubt have something it'll be top quality, but it'll cost!
