if you were have a kitchen done next year it would be spot on

Well seeing as they're saving all this money hiring untrained foreign workers, perhaps they'd like to treat your mum to re-doing it properly in a year.

You know my views about this. I've vented them enough on here already, but you're all pretty much on the point in this thread I reckon. Each time we look, the fault is with the employers (the money men). They're just trying to get the job done as cheap as possible, so the money can go elsewhere. In Local Government and the NHS, from what I can tell it's so enless middle manager can have endless meetings talking about how to get things done.

I've no objection to trained, skilled EU workers coming over here to help meet demand in construction. It's just like the how UK builders trooped over to Spain and Germany on the 80s, following the money.

But when some Boris turns up with a float in one hand and a whisk in the other, proclaiming to be a plasterer, there should be someone there to check that he can do the job properly. Chances are that person is in a feckin' meeting!!

But your not allowed to see his papers or certificates as this infringes his data protection

My dads a foreman and spends more time doing paper work or chasing these turds about getting them to sort out the shit!

2 Months ago he was taken to a job his firm had priced up 2 years ago, they didint get the job because it was too much money.

The company who wanted the work done had hired poles because they were cheap and did good work.

Anyway, my dad and his boss stood in the middle of the site and looked around for all of 5 miniuts, both looked at each other and said..."this buildings unsafe" so they asked the only pole who spoke English where's the architec's drawings or the council plans.

The pole said "whats an architec, council planner???" and they had been working there for 18 months!!!!!!!!!!!!.

They can NOT do the work PROPERLY full stop, half of the beams holding the building up were only in the walls by about an inch not the 18 that they should have been, the sewage outlet was incorrectly routed and leaking.

But they all had there CIS cards, that wonderful money making thing that lets these b@st@rds work in this countrys building sites :evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil: :evil

Under the Data Protection Act, as an employer looking to hire someone you have the right to obtain all the information you want about someone, provided they give their consent to do so. Such as References, Medical Records, Criminal Records, Qualifications, Work Permits, etc.

If they don't give you the right to check up on the information that you want to see then, you as the employer, have a legitimate right not to hire them.

CIS cards are just HM Customs way of managing tax deductions for payments to subbies. Holding one isn't proof that you are qualified to do a job. Any more than if I bought a white coat and a stethoscope, it doesn't make me employable as a doctor.

It's still up to the employers (the money men) to make sure that their hiring the right people. Chances are they'll get bit on the arse in a few years when a multi-million pound development doesn't get signed off because of failure to meet regs. Or worse still, an unsafe building collapses.

There ain't no defending that!! Infringing on other people's property is way out of order!! Did you call in the plod? Or at least the council?

And when my dad refused them on the site for that they called the agency and had someone round within an hour calling him racist and everything else under the sun,his boss eventually told him let him work.

Then a few weeks later at another job he refused a bugerian (spelling?) entry to the job because he spoke no English, not even yes or no,my dad couldnt go through all the health and safety stuff, fire exits and such.

Again same bloke turned up saying...."You cant expect everyone in britian to speak English" and that its illegal to do what he wa doing and my dads firm had to supply at there cost an interpritor so he can work!!!!:evil::evil::evil::evil::evil::evil:

CIS cards last 3 years and you have to retake them before you can work on site, they HAVE replaced city & guilds,my dad was no longer able to work as a foreman because he didnt have one, despite the fact that when he did his training it took 5 years to qualify and he's got 40 years site experiance.

Sounds like your dads boss needs to get some backbone. We've had contractors turn up before, who blatantly aren't up to the standard we've stipulated. The agency gets a phone call and the contractor's gone. After all, your dad's company are the customer and are paying for a service, not to train the untrained. If the agency are doing the required checks they should be able to provide that proof to the customer.

Again, it's an agency they are be paying for a service, and if an interpretor is required, that's for the agency to sort. Think I'd be looking to a different agency.

Re: The CIS cards......I was speaking to my brother (a taxation accountant, specialising in construction and civil engineering - Helping the money men get richer still :( ) the other week about taxing migrant workers, and he clued me in about CIS cards, and their role. Additionally, I cannot see why C&G are still offering construction courses if someone can just go out and apply for a card which makes them a "qualified builder"

Still, if your old man's in the game, I'm sure his view must be pretty cast iron. We'll have to agree to disagree.

I might be wrong about the CIS card but he had to take 3 tests to get a card to say he's able and safe to do the work and be insured.

What's worrying me then is that if this other card that's requuired to say your up to the job is difficult to get (which I guess for safety's sake, is a good thing) that foreign peeps (who barely speak a word) are getting them so easy. Sounds like someone's on a fiddle........

Posse, I feel for you mate and your Folks, :(

Not all immigrants are like that, Polish builders did an amazing job on my parents roof. I think you've just experienced the lower end of the human spectrum that exists regardless of race or background. I would have been just as p1ssed off if they were British Builders who had done that!

That said, I love this country despite its many flaws. It's gone too soft. Immigration does need to be controlled much more tightly, like in Australia. Too much of anything is bad.

A solution? I think we should have our own Foreign Legion. Serve 3 years fighting for Her majesty's service and give up all past allegiances and you're in. Just an idea of mine for people who really want to prove their worth. :)

Round them all up, put them in a field and..........

Immigration does get a bad name but I place the blame squarely at the government's (and in part the People's) feet. Look at it this way, if you couldn't get a job here but were offered 4 times your salary to work in, say, France would you do it?

I would and I am fiercely British, it all comes down to money, you can't blame immigrants for wanting money.

It is a combination of factors. Cost of living is too high. It's the governments fault for dithering, for being soft, for allowing a huge influx of cheap labour. Multiculturalism needs a boot up the arse. If you're lucky enough to work here, then prove your worth, learn the language, pay your taxes, embrace the values and principles of the country you want to work in.

Well , lets make one thing clear before i go on....or get accused of being racist ( again ) . Yes i am . I fookin hate them . All of them .

I have absolutely no time for any foreigner who comes into my country and decides that he/she can take whatever benefit they want , claim whatever housing they want , get whatever job they want ( regardless of whether or not they can do it or not ) .....all because this f**k wit t**sser called Brown ( ne: Blair ) has decided it ok

This country of ours is going to rat sh*t ...end of .

Immigration on the whole needs a massive kick up the arse . Its open door policy has got to stop . We need proper border controls ...NOW !

The benefit system needs sorting ...you don"t look or try for a job...you get fook all . Get off your lazy chav fat fookin benefit scrounging arse and get a job

Darren ...i feel for your parents m8 . just before Christmas my sister was moved flats , and whilst doing that the landlord had buliders in ( Polish  )...guess what....all MY KIDS Christmas presents got nicked...yep , you guessed it , by the Polish biulders . They could all talk pigeon English before the Old Bill turned up...then went mute / no comprende /no understand officer ......

Oh and by the way...i work for a 25 stone black man from Antigua...and yes ...he calls a spade a spade . Its not Racism , its telling it how it is .

Where I work in York, it's on a large country estate. They're building a large outdoor equestrian centre, which is going to be the largest in europe. Half the builders are Polish.

There is a strict 10 mph speed limit on the roads around the edge of the estate, and 5 mph on the estate.

Last week one of the girls in the office was doing the 10mph and the car behind her was up her bumper. She got onto the estate, slowed to 5 and the car started to blow its horn. Then when he could, he sped past, blowing his horn and giving hand signals.

The girl took the number, and told the HR manager, who's this really nice doris, who takes no shit off anyone. Even though she didn't hire these builders, she can certainly fire them. And she did. All four polacks who were in the car got their marching orders.

Only another couple of hundred to go.
