johnny_h Posted November 10, 2007 Author Report Posted November 10, 2007 Small world! Was It was you who beat my bid by a pound on this....
Toby Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 I'm going to get it converted to unleaded with new bronze guides. I'm open to suggestions to where to get this done as I hear if it's not done properly the seats can fall out or even crack the head. I have had one quote so far from Newark engines for £200 + vat. I'll keep at the ports Toby Mind the push rod holes, make a "penny on a stick" as a plug guage.
johnny_h Posted November 11, 2007 Author Report Posted November 11, 2007 it's at this point you lost me
Toby Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 Choose your port diameter, then make a washer of that diameter and make sure it fits down all the ports (possibly by mounting it on a stick / rod / bar!). This will prevent any necking down anywhere.
johnny_h Posted November 11, 2007 Author Report Posted November 11, 2007 Gotya! I thought that was what you meant. I guess the term penny on a stick came from the old currency otherwise I will be needing to add iron! I found this..."if an inlet port is not to restrict its valve it needs to be up to 75% of the valve diameter for road engines and 80% for race engines. It depends on port efficiency, intended cam lift and other factors but it's a good guide. The crossflow inlet port is therefore small even for its standard 38mm or 39mm valves and to supply a big valve properly like the 41.3mm one it looks like we might potentially need to open up the ports to nearly 31mm (75%) for road tune and 33mm (80%) for race tune."
Toby Posted November 11, 2007 Report Posted November 11, 2007 As I say - choose your port diameter - your choice. Mind your push rod holes, although you can sleeve them if you hit them. In all honesty you will be trading off some bottom end for some top end. You dont have to do it in one hit. Gas speed is important for road and race engines, I suspect ford had some reasoning for there port diameter choice. Keep reading Have you chosen your cam yet or is the A3 going back in?
johnny_h Posted November 12, 2007 Author Report Posted November 12, 2007 I'm only using the car for brapping around town and going to meets and as long as it leaves saxo's behind comfortably I'll be quite happy. I've found a 31mm washer and to be honest that's a lot of metal to be removed! I'm going to just give them a nice shape and polish them up with a flapwheel then send it off for the valve seats and guides and a skim.
busta Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 where you sending it for guides and skim bud? as i ,m going to need mine done and not sure where to go !
johnny_h Posted November 12, 2007 Author Report Posted November 12, 2007 where you sending it for guides and skim bud?as i ,m going to need mine done and not sure where to go ! Not sure yet. I'm asking around. I have had a few pointers and will let you know where I end up sending it. When it comes to unleaded insert work I want to know that it's going to a engineer that knows thier stuff and comes recommended. Fiesta steve says morspeed are good and well priced.
busta Posted November 12, 2007 Report Posted November 12, 2007 xcheers bud thats great if you point me the right direction as well

flyingbanana Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 Small world! Was It was you who beat my bid by a pound on this.... snap got mine from the same people, but didnt out bid you im currently having my block done here http://www.vintage-engine.net/home.html they know there stuff! very helpful, to convert head to unleaded there is £87+ vat
johnny_h Posted November 13, 2007 Author Report Posted November 13, 2007 How much did you pay for yours bananaman if you dont mind me asking. The reason I ask is because the one in the picture sold for 200 quid near as damn it. When I called them to ask about them converting my head they quoted me 200 quid plus vat. That doesn't make sense to me because I am supplying the head, the valves, springs, it's already ported and they are charging me more than if I had bought one off the shelf so to speak. o_O
flyingbanana Posted November 13, 2007 Report Posted November 13, 2007 i asked if they had buy now price at the time £240.....i got it for £143 + postage
johnny_h Posted November 13, 2007 Author Report Posted November 13, 2007 i asked if they had buy now price at the time £240.....i got it for £143 + postage Ha ha! what am I missing them? They are giving away unleaded big valve ported heads for 150 to 200 squid yet they charge more to do an unleaded conversion on a supplied head. that's fookin irish

johnny_h Posted November 13, 2007 Author Report Posted November 13, 2007 I wish I was in the garage mate! I'm in the seat of my scania truck reading an endless pile of retro ford and classic ford mags rally design and burton catalogues dreaming about being at home giving my ports what for!
