I was reading an old classic ford mag last night and a guy with a Cologne engined Cortina was saying that the fitting of an LSD found him 1.5 seconds on the strip!!

When I used to run my capri on the strip it only ever had an open diff and would run times as low as 15.4 to 16.2 depending on the track.

My only doubt is that Ford don`t quote the 2.8i special as being any quicker than the early open diff model??

I would obviously like to fit an LSD to my next Capri (funds permitting) but I was interested to hear your experiences on improvements in 1/4 mile times after fitting an LSD.

It stands to reason mate, as you are simply gettin more traction as both wheels are getting equal drive and herefore there is twice the traction.

No self respecting drag addict would be seen dead without a slipper!

1.5 secs my arse  . 1.5 secs with a slipper , slicks and half the car missing maybe

Itll definately only be an advantage through 1st and 2nd gears, 3rd if youve got the power. There should also be a bit less power loss due to friction but id consider it a negligable amount. But every last bit does count.

when I took the open 3.9 out of my escort and put in a welded 4.1 I improved my time for the 1/4 mile by .3 second

Sounds like a cold, hard fact!

Dave with the blue pre-cross anglia ran a 14.4 with an open diff. It is only going to improve your 60ft time so 0.3 sounds about right to me + I would say only if wheel spin / traction is an issue.

You say that, but strangely I seem to remember that when I compared the 'before and after' timing slips the gain was made AFTER the 1/8th??

I assumed it was probably because I dont have a particularly powerful engine, so the higher diff ratio helped it to pull once the speed rose a bit??

I also guessed (based on the above) that what I had gained off the line by welding the diff, i lost by putting the 4.1 in (ie more wheelspin).

Ill see if I can find the slips and confirm it if needs be.

on the strip i ran a quaife atb with a 3.9 but for the last round i done & the night race at pod i used a welded 4.1. This took my car from 13.4 best to a 13.1 & took 0.1 off my 60ft to 1.6. on the road the car felt alot quicker through the gears & was still happy at 100+(on private track  ) with the atb it made a big difference on the road to traction & made the car alot more predictable

Higher diff should help everywhere in the 1/4. Just need to practice the launch or look for more grip.

You trying to say my 'Turboracer NoGrip' tyres might not be ideal for the strip then ??

They'll help it up on cam!

1/4 mile speed/time will depend on what sort of power band/delievery your engine has as well as changing gearing . For example my old Harris pinto went faster by 0.4 secs in my mates car with a 3.9 diff and a 4 speed 1600 gearbox than it did in my car with a 5 speed type 9 and a 4.1 diff :? . The same engine , same tyres and wheel type , same weight car , same 60 foot times , same 1/8 mile time but he flew down the last part of the track faster :? . I had to use 5 gears and he was in 4th so perhaps too many gear changes can slow you down or i wasn't pushing the throttle down hard enough !!!!!!!!

Agree power delivery comes into it, but same 60ft, same engine going faster in the second 1/8th is odd. What was your terminal speeds on each gear box? Why were you using 5th? I recon you got wheel spin on the 4.1 and were slow with the gears. (Wheel spin usually adds to the mph)

It did 2 mph more terminal speed in my mates car (96mph v 98mph) at santa pod . I tried leaving mine in 4th but run out of mph and had to use 5th about 3 secs from the finish line , he can cross the line in 4th . The engine was very torquey in the mid-range and i think that the lower gearing helped the engine stay in the power for longer instead of over reving past this power band :? . He's now fitted a 5 speed type 9 box but left the 3.9 diff so i'll see what times it runs this summer out of interest
