slappy Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 Wonder if anybody can help I am looking to fit coil over front legs on my two door Corsair, when I get it back on the road ( one day ) as they are the same as mk1 Cortina's has anybody done the conversion, or got a pair for sale, I am looking at about a two inch drop thanks Slappy.
V8ian Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 They will be a standard type 2.25" conversion, basic kits are available from Rally Design, you may find you need to change the top mounts so the spring cup will fit, BUT that is by no means certain, you may find the ally spring tops will fit into your bearings.
slappy Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 cheers v8ian, I will look into the rally design springs, how about the inserts, can you get away with standard length
V8ian Posted January 9, 2008 Report Posted January 9, 2008 I would think Standard length will be fine, as you will not be lowering the car to excessive amounts as long as the struts are not bottoming out against the top mount, , I faffed about and fitted Koni top adjustable inserts from RS 2000, so for obvious reasons I can tune the damping to suip my requirements, What engine are you using??
slappy Posted January 9, 2008 Author Report Posted January 9, 2008 only a 1660 pre crossflow so not to heavy
Toby Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 Don't know if you know or it helps but the Lotus Cortina struts were an inch shorter than a standard Mk 1 strut - I only mention this as you mentioned having considered shorter ones.
GT_Jim Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 im looking to do this to my front struts, i spoke to GAZ they put new inserts in with adjustable rebound and convert them to coil overs for 250 - there are pics of there work on the back page of retro ford
V8ian Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 With a stock engine in a car slightly heavier than a mk1 about 175-185lbs would be a good compromise for the road without being a bone jarring ride.
Anglia68 Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 I built my own as well, for my Anglia, using Capri inserts inside Mk2 Cortina struts. The Capri inserts are shorter than the Cortina ones so allow a lower ride height. Coilover conversion was from Rally Design as well as the 170lb springs.
R1.Andy Posted January 10, 2008 Report Posted January 10, 2008 i just got mine back from gaz..coil overs and rear shocks £470ish worth it to me as i wouldnt have a clue where to start if doing it myself. mind the finish on them is nice i paid a bit extra for a differnt plating
slappy Posted January 10, 2008 Author Report Posted January 10, 2008 thanks for all the advice guys I will go away and take a hammer to the piggy bank now.
