aden Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 i know this has been asked a million times before, but hey im gonna ask again anyway, i have a 5 speed type 9 with a quickshift already fitted, would it be worth putting it in my rs?? its just that ive heard that the ratios are crap, also i dont want to cut nothing, ive seen that gs escorts do some mounting blocks to fit them, does anyone know if they work ok?? like i said i dont wanna cut nothing and i definately dont want any vibrations or banging, any advice greatly appriciated
aden Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 also, does anybodt know how difficult it would be to put the rs cogs inot the 5 speed case? maybe this would be the way forward
lee_capri Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 i prefer a 4-speed me my self has you get longer 2nd and 3rd and type 9s dont last me any-time at all drive to hard
aden Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 yeah i know what you saying, just really fancy an extra gear for long trips, but dont want to fook the car up
lee_capri Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 wekk the escort was made has a 4 speed so y would it f**k up may-be you are lookinf for a few more mile's to gallon in stead, the v8 cappa when use that dont use 5th at all it's more raunchy in 3rd and 4th to hold those bmw's off to be honest i have doing about 120mph to pop it in 5th,god wish it was 4 speed
aden Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 i meant fook it up as in not being as good to drive its just that when going to the shows in the summer on the motor way and stuff a 5th gear would be nice
lee_capri Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 i under stand what u are saying but most of the time on motorway's ect you would be doing the speed limit, but i think it's about choice i prefer 4 gear's but it's your car matey and the 5th does make for a smother drive and the engine is not wineing on,if i was going to use has a daily drive i would probley want a 5th to save the ware and tear on the engine, but if i was going to race it i would want 4,im building a wagion it will be pushing about 160bhp and running a 4-speed but it's for the track and weekend blasting not for all year use
aden Posted January 27, 2008 Author Report Posted January 27, 2008 just want a good comprimise really, a lot of people seem to run 5 speeds in there escorts so they cant be all bad
bortaf Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 What ratios do the RS2000 boxes run ?, if it's the standard type E ratios the first 4 are exactly the same as the type 9 5 speed so you wont notice any difference at all till you go into 5th
shaun1.6ghia Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 i prefer a 4-speed me my self has you get longer 2nd and 3rd and type 9s dont last me any-time at all drive to hard i've seen proof of that (in tesco's car park). i run a 4 an i agree a little, but i do love the pick up on the 4.. i wouldn't change it tho. personaly havn't tryed a type 9 5speed tho so a little biast.
marky4 Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 got a 5 speed type 9 in mine and apart from 1st being very short and 2nd alittle short i think its fine especially as i do alot of motorway journeys to shows etc.
andy_rs2k Posted January 27, 2008 Report Posted January 27, 2008 For the road they are okay the ratios not much different from standard and still good fun and save the engine and your ears on the motorway... If its great fun on trackdays your after you will need a gear kit in the five speed with a longer 1st and closer ratios to avoid the larger drops in revs between gear changes and keep it in the cams power band easily and forget all about fuel economy....
aden Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 yeah think i might do it, does any one know what the gs escort x member mountings are like??? i really dont wanna hack the mounting about if i can help it

60ftman Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 long time since I've done one, but I seem to remember the rear mount needs moving back about 3", and the prop shortening the same amount.
mossy Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 you cant fit the 5spd without cutting the floor as the gearstick hole has to be moved back a bit....also the tunnel may need a bit of persuasion.. Also lowering blocks may be needed...and a different propshaft too!
MR "S" Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 GOT TWO FOUR SPEED CAPRIS,MUCH PREFER THEM. NO WORRIES WITH MOTORWAYS ETC.
tim Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 you cant fit the 5spd without cutting the floor as the gearstick hole has to be moved back a bit....also the tunnel may need a bit of persuasion..Also lowering blocks may be needed...and a different propshaft too! unless its an rs shell where the hole is already moved back an rs 4 speed has the same ratio 1-4 as a 2.8 5 speed so thats the 1 you want if you want to keep the same ratio

bortaf Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Don't forget you need to cut down the input shaft on a 2.8 box you wouldn't be the first to spend hours struggling to get it on the engine
lee_capri Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 Don't forget you need to cut down the input shaft on a 2.8 box you wouldn't be the first to spend hours struggling to get it on the engine ive done that has well
allanmex Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 aden, as above use a 2.8 capri 5 speed with your standard rs alloy bell housing, the input shaft will need shortening, u can use your standard rs propshaft and alloy gearbox lowering blocks. but the mount will need moving back a bit. im using a 2.8 box and its noticably better than a sierra box, its like the original rs box but with 5 gears
aden Posted January 28, 2008 Author Report Posted January 28, 2008 aden, as above use a 2.8 capri 5 speed with your standard rs alloy bell housing, the input shaft will need shortening, u can use your standard rs propshaft and alloy gearbox lowering blocks. but the mount will need moving back a bit.im using a 2.8 box and its noticably better than a jelly mould box, its like the original rs box but with 5 gears ha i didnt know that the 2.8i ratios were the same!! gonna prob go for the gearbox mountings from gs escorts coz he reckons that you wont then need to cut the mounting back, the blocks allow you to move the x member back and atttach it to the the original holes, think its got to be done
allanmex Posted January 28, 2008 Report Posted January 28, 2008 yeah ive seen those mountings they look ok, ive never tried em though, i just moved the mounts back on mine theyve gotta be worth a try and much easier to do
