Retromotorsport Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 To coin a phrase from Mick Jones, who happened to build most of those rally cars your so much in love with............... "rallying is for cross country tinkers" he built the cars and he couldnt stand it .... so much time, love and hard graft to build a car, then Vatanan goes and throws it at a bloody tree... 80 ton of tree ,been there 300 odd years and the silly rally drivers think they can knock em over with 1 ton of Escort... mad .. sheer madness. plus theres the rain.. no concrete paddock, no grandstands, no bars, resturants, toilets, (ok Lydden Hill only has the toilets, but then they use that for rallycross) but you see what i'm saying, rallying is just so uncivilised
Fiesta Steve Posted November 15, 2005 Report Posted November 15, 2005 At the end of the day I enjoy both rallying and circuit/track racing. And when it comes to tussles on the track and fighting for position, these boys are just as exciting: well done Mk2Jo, proper battles there I've still got the the Rossi/Gibernau fight at the beginning of the year saved (2nd round), still gets me on the edge of my seat every time Sorry to continue with the off topic but Moto GP does it for me too. I never watch cars racing on the telly cos its sooo boring compared to bikes. When it comes to cars I really do love everything, racing at lydden is good but thats not really rallying is it. I've watched a few local rallys but it gets boring waiting for the next car to arrive only to find out he didn't get it proper sideways. Circuit racing is o.k to watch when its close.

RS_Dan Posted November 16, 2005 Report Posted November 16, 2005 rallycross is amazing All those lovely cars, and hardly any restrictions

bashmk1 Posted November 17, 2005 Report Posted November 17, 2005 and me!!! whens the next one? any of you guys going again? jo, steve?
Admin Mk2Jo Posted November 17, 2005 Admin Report Posted November 17, 2005 They had one at the end of August and usually the next one at Lydden is March/April again. They used to race at Brands years ago and then they bought the race back to Brands 2 years ago (fantastic stuff) and last year as well (i think) but for some reason it was not there this year. It would've been November. I'll remind you Bash when it's on again at Lydden Jo
FOSSIE Posted November 18, 2005 Report Posted November 18, 2005 so much time, love and hard graft to build a car, then Vatanan goes and throws it at a bloody tree... Yeah, but in the process, he demonstrated some of the finest car control, and some of the most committed, on-the-limit driving you will ever see. As far as i'm concerned, he could break as many cars as he liked! Brand new shells were only a couple hundred quid back then 80 ton of tree ,been there 300 odd years and the silly rally drivers think they can knock em over with 1 ton of Escort... mad .. sheer madness. Can't argue with that. Seen it myself - the bark still hasn't grown back fully 10years on. But non of us would be in this game - circuit racers and rally drivers - if we weren't just a little bit deranged? Rallying just takes it to another level. plus theres the rain.. no concrete paddock, no grandstands, no bars, resturants, toilets, (ok Lydden Hill only has the toilets, but then they use that for rallycross) but you see what i'm saying, rallying is just so uncivilised You big wuss. Just off the top of my head, i can think of 2 former circuit racers (Patrick Watts, Ray Belm) who have recently started rallying in the forests and have both said that the buzz you get is miles better than going round in circles. Having said all that, i'm dying to give circuit racing a go. If only you could take a co-driver and use pacenotes. I must admit, i'm not much of a driver. I used to race Karts - and in practice heats i would always just wait on the line for everyone else to bugger off - then i could get down to some serious driving - me, the kart, the track. Never liked the idea of having other karts around you I vote Rallying, by the way. cheers Tom

Don't get much better than that.

LUKE261 Posted November 26, 2006 Report Posted November 26, 2006 sorry, got 2 b short oval racing 4 me mate
kms Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 This is really hard! - They're two totally different diciplines. I can see what people are saying about circuit racing and having to overtake - but you can always see what your target is. In rallying you don't know how far the next driver is so every single driver pushes to the absolute limit. I've only been to watch circuit racing twice - once for touring cars - I've never been so bored in all my life - wait 5 mins for the pack to come round then you don't see another car for another 5 mins - I fell asleep . And I've also been to watch Moto GP - totally different experience - fantastic atmosphere / racing - so much fun had. But rallying - I make a point of going at least once a year for my 'fix' - probably one of the only sports where the crowd can make a difference to the outcome - so much adrenaline just being a spectator - it must be out of this world to drive. If I had too choose (which I do) then rally it is - I think rally is what made Ford what we have all come to know and love. Aohhh
kms Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Also forgot to say if you want to see rally cars overtaking - go and watch the stages at Rockingham next weekend - see Tims other post.
mk1super Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 All am saying is Roger Clark wet tarmac rallying does it for me as with a mk1/2 sideways is on the cards
CéDriC Posted November 28, 2006 Report Posted November 28, 2006 Circuit... Some rally cars are good, and that's the most you see... But i remember again the Sechaud brothers which race two mk1 escort with cosworth head, in France, and even an Alpine turbo don't resist...
young un Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 circuit for me even though me and my dad might do some clubman rallying in the mex steve
Gilli Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Rallying for me, but it'd have to be tarmac rallying! Dont have even half the interest in loose surface events, not exactly sure why.... I blame the legend that is Connie Smith(RIP) in Black Beauty and bags full of opposite lock!!!!!
Arched Escy Posted May 18, 2007 Report Posted May 18, 2007 Rallying! It's just amazing! The atmosphere is fookin unreal! It's so easy to get up at 6.30 to drive for 3 hours when you know you're going to have so much craic!Nothing like watching Wesley Patterson rev the shite out of his Duratec as he drifts around a hairpin.Love walking down service, breakfast roll in hand, with random people starting chats with you.
foggyvolki Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 I see both sides of the argument, but for those who think it's easy driving on a circuit, yes if you drive like a rally driver at 95% throwing in the heroic power oversteer, but that would put you about 4 seconds off the pace in any single make series. Rally drivers and race drivers are different beasts, in both it's vital to finish but in racing its more important to finish first and to do that you have to drive 110%. while not getting taken off by one of the other idiots whose even more desperate to win than you. Looking back at a bit of history all of the race drivers who have competed in rallys are blindingly quik untill they have a big off and don't finish, all of the rally drivers who race finish the race but never win. But for me you cannot beat the full on MKII race cars and the zakspeeds that look like they should have ASBOS. But I appreciate their more sophisticated rallying cousins.
foggyvolki Posted July 6, 2007 Report Posted July 6, 2007 Sorry one more thing, Race circuits are surrounded by walls and most don't have many gravel traps, I think if I had the option of running head on into the wall at Rockingham or any other wall or armco in the uk at 130mph or sliding into a grass verge or clipping a tree sideways at 80+mph I think I'd go for wrapping the car round the tree option. But hey if were looking for something shit to waste money on drag racing is the only way forward IMHO Lights Red, Green Power 14 seconds later off the power and on the brakes. Yeehaa. haha
