Rick Posted February 20, 2008 Report Posted February 20, 2008 id say any second hand engine is risking it unless you know the seller is trustworthy. iv heard stories of people filling them with gearbox oil to silence the knocking... and concrete core plugs crossflows are infamous when it comes to long life as theyre so simple. id say smoke it about until you can afford to rebuild it. prob cost about 500 quid for the machining and anyone can put a simple engine together.
d_bizzle Posted February 20, 2008 Author Report Posted February 20, 2008 bring it to the wingspan meet tonight(gatwick) there will be loads of ears to listen to it!!! only a 10 minute drive!! Bugger - I should've read that yesterday...! I'm just outside staines if you want a hand with a service n stuff. I'll have a look n stuff n teach you what i can if you want. Just give me a yell A very kind offer, thanks! May well call you on that...
d_bizzle Posted February 21, 2008 Author Report Posted February 21, 2008 Thanks all for the valuable advice - I've decided to just bite the bullet and wang a new crossflow in there. I like the idea of servicing it with proper oil etc and then smoking it about till it breaks, but I know what I'm like - I'll be paranoid every time I get in it that I won't make it to wherever I'm going! So, Darran at Escort-Tec's sorted me out with a 1600 x-flow that I'm collecting on Saturday, I'll take it down to Morley's (where the car is now) on Monday and it'll all be sweet in a jiffy! Obviously it's annoying to have to shell out a wedge of cash when you've only just bought a car, but it could've been worse... a couple of years ago a bought a Fiat Coupe Turbo and the clutch lunched itself within days... and cost about £750 to replace. So, new engine (including fitting!) in the 'Tina works out less than a chav's clutch. Game on. Gotta love old Fords...!
toad650 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 keep the old engine, strip it and build it into a monster when you get the cash. That way you'll learn about the engine and slowly make up a new monster engine to put in your tina or sell on And if you want help servicing later on just give me a yell
pauln Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 And if you want advise on how to smoke about in a car til it breaks have a word with zetecmk2 . Maybe I will see you blasting about next time I go to Redhill.
zetecmk2 Posted February 21, 2008 Report Posted February 21, 2008 cheers paul!!! 99% killed by you...i just added the finishing touches!!
pauln Posted February 22, 2008 Report Posted February 22, 2008 What about all the others??? Mr serial killer.
d_bizzle Posted February 23, 2008 Author Report Posted February 23, 2008 Just picked up a crossflow from Escort-Tec - it'll be off to Morleys on Monday!
Fiesta Steve Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 I see you have a new engine so its a bit late now but, the puff of smoke on start up is only the valve stem oil seals and they won't cause any harm if they are worn. The breathing from under the bonnet could be piped back into the carb making the engine eat its own fumes via a catch tank to separate the oil. I used to run an XR2 that used a litre of oil everyweek, it was well worn. Don't use Valvoline as its a waste of money if your engine is just going to leak it and burn it. Use the cheap stuff from asda and put in some 'Stop Smoke', its a thick oil additive that you can get from halfords and it worked well on my car. I ran that engine for years like that. I never used to check the oil, I'd wait for the oil pressure light to come on when cornering hard, then I knew it was time to top up!! This used to happen every week and the engine just kept going despite hitting the red line on every gear change.
Rick Posted February 23, 2008 Report Posted February 23, 2008 some people whack a bit of gearbox oil in to thicken it up a little. prob dont do it much good in the long run but its a quick fix
