English axle halfshaft question

so you uprated everything but the shafts, so they are the week link, if you already have a tran x slipper, why dont you get the side gears from them and the shafts direct from quaife, thats wot i did, sorted

loads cheeper than wot you have been quoted m8  gears are 112.00 and i think the shafts were about 140 each they was the heavy duty EN30 ones not EN 24  they are about 120 each

I'll phone them tomorrow then  . I've got an A.T.B. diff which i like and the big side gears for it are about £120-150 but if you buy a new diff they are free (even though the diff is £500 :?) . Did the shafts you bought fit then or need shortening ? Are they the 16 spline ones or the 18's ? Are the wheels still in the original position and not pushed out nearer the wheel arch ?

mine are 16 spline EN30 in a tran X plate diff, tran x do an english and a sailsbury casing, ime sure if you have the sailsbury the biggest shafts you can use is 16 spline like me, if english casing you can have 18 slpine ( i think thats correct) ime not sure about quaife ATB, i thought you hab a tranX slipper

No i've got an A.T.B. mate . I like it as the cars predictable and grips pretty good despite the cheap tyres i'm running . The bloke at the rally place said the 18 spline ZF shafts are stronger than the 16 spline atlas ones , maybe the 16 spline ones would be good enough but i was going to get the 18's as they cost about the same . Not sure what to do really as i'll only run at the Pod a few times on street rubber so might not bother changing anything :?

Gaz obviously your call, and long enough in the tooth to make the right judgement for what you're doing with it...

I only upgraded mine cause I wanted to give it beans off the line thus have fun, add another dimension in motorsport stylee slicks and I drive to Pod/SCR and back...

my casing only allows me to run the 16 spline, thats why i went for EN30 Heavy duty, they was recomended to me by Xsport racing, i havent had a problem yet, touch wood :mrgreen:

Ok thanks baz  . Just looked in the quaffie brochure and the side gears for my A.T.B. diff are £150 (or free if i buy another £450 A.T.B. diff) but this is alot cheaper than buying a new tran-x plate L.S.D. etc at approx £600. I could then buy the 16 spline shafts that fit without needing shortening (or the 18 spline shafts that need shortening ) , wheel bearings , etc etc etc and knock the price down a fair bit

ive got a mate with a mgb 4.6litre v8 running 350bhp with nos

hes still using a salisbury axle which as far as i know, is the same as the english?

its got a phantom gripper locker fitted, around 5:1 cwp and drag tyres

until he reached 300bhp he had no half shaft issues (16spline)

he never broke one, but found after a year of drag strip meets it had twisted slightly at the hub end

hes now fitted uprated halfshafts and has had no further axle problems

im now going this route and have a salisbury axle wating to go onto the capri

ive also ordered a phantom gripper locker and will be running 265/50/15 road tyres on 15x9j revolution 5spokes

So he's twisted the 16 spline shafts but not his new ones then ? What new ones did he get , 18 spline or something else ?

Bought 2 piece Quaife 16 spline and they did need machining... they were from West Wales Ral Supplies and were about £150 each ... Replaced rest while at it with a rebuilt 3.9 diff new bearings, and Tran X plate LSD with the 16 side gears ...

ok thanks , so even this route is expensive  . So i'm looking at approx £500 just for the shafts and diff side gears to suit them . Then new wheel bearings + maybe machine work etc etc then £200 for 2 grippy street legal tyres :?

i think hes got 18spines now yeah, with the accompanying sidegears :)

ive gone with salisbury/english instead of using the atlas axle already fitted due to the parts being cheaper and its quite a bit narrower than the atlas

it comes in useful when running 265 rubber and wanting to stay within the stock archs

within oldskool drag racing circles its seen as a very cheap and strong axle

Gaz just had a look at receipts and my shafts were £366 inc VAT for the pair + what you've been quoted for side gears. Machining was £35. plus the wheel bearing cost so yep, not far off your estimate... And now I'm putting all my receipts away :shock:

:lol::lol: well if it's £500+ for 2x metal sticks with teeth on the end and a few bearings then i can imagine the rest

Toby got 18 spline and Tran-X diffs. He bought two and they did him a deal, that way he could set one low one up and a road one too, think he got them for £900 the pair. Gaz I'm sure he would happily shorten the shafts for you he's a lovely bloke!!

Go large!!

but isnt shorting the shafts what made the baby atlas weak compaired to the full width version?

Didn't seem to with the Anglia axles from the reputation of them being stronger.

Well I don't know  , it's probably that most Anglias dont have the power escorts get put in them. :?

They normally run 5HA's or 7HA salisbury units i think .. the English axle is a Timken Axle

The 5 and 7 HA's are smaller than the 4HA which the Works Escorts used instead of the Atlas on rough events

Well i give up  . Phoned everyone today, even quaffie themselves and you can't get any complete ready to fit 16/18 spline beefy halfshafts unless you spend £500+ . It's taking the piss wanting £500+ for two metal sticks with teeth on the ends so i might start making them myself for less !!!!!!!!

Here the prices =2x heavy duty atlas 16 spline shafts (english length) £214+VAT

2x group 4 flanges to suit £140+VAT

2x16 spline diff side gears to suit new shafts £150+vat

Then add extra for wheel bearings , wheel studs , etc etc

Posted

603.95 including vat, then you have to pay for new bearings, use your studs  thats not too bad is it, how much has your car cost so far only for you to leave a week link  fit them mate end off then

It's a bloody piss take though mate so i won't buy any unless mine break first  . The bloke at quaife reckons that their normal 2 piece 22 spline English halfshaft replacements would be strong enough as they're 30% uprated over standard :? . Everyone on the internet reckons they're shite so who do you believe ? :?

Posted

I dealt through X sport racing direct to quaife, he told John Cross the owner them ones was rated to 180bhp, i said thats no good ime using standard shafts with 184 bhp  thats why i went Atlas H/D, its difficult mate  as a bit of advise i would say when you change them fit the best you can afford  you could take some spare standard ones, but they normally take the side of the diff when they go BANG, unless you are lucky
