English axle halfshaft question

I'm not worried about keyboards as mine's more powerfull than theirs :mrgreen: . What i'm worried about is spending a fair bit of money on something i don't really need , this is the worry :dope: . So to re-cap not 1 person has broken a standard shaft on street rubber with a proper LSD on the street , they've only snapped them with sticky rubber at a drag strip :? . Well i've tested mine and they ain't breaking so i'll stick with the street rubber and the standard 1100 shafts for now then

the group 1 shafts are just a single bearing, group 4 are fully floating, you can use either the atlas hubs or the english ones but the atlas ones come out 10mm more than the english ones. and as for spending 1200 on the axle, if you decide you dont need it then you can allways sell it for near enough the same money you paid for it as the shafts are sometimes hard to come by. Try west wales rally spares and ask for the bearings to suit the shafts when fitted into an enlish axle. jay

petrolhead was on street rubber
:dope: are you sure ? It's always got slicks + gas when i see it :?

defo street rubber as he drove it there, and ime sure it was on the launch so the gas wouldnt be on full, and i think it was the day his noz solenoide packed up so might not of even been with noz  thats why he now has a fookin proper axle, American

Well if he's breaking them on street rubber then i'm foooooked so best get saving !!!!!!!!

From memory I was on 048's for my first breakages too.....

It's not a waste to spend money on a reliable drive train - it's a waste of money to spend a lot of money on horses you're scared to use in case your shafts wont take it. :ykt:

By the way what clutch are you running?

I've got an A.P. Sprint cover and a ceramic metalic paddle centre . I've not got yoko 048's at present as still destroying the A539's for a bit longer . May just buy some more A539's though to save spending a grand on the axle instead !!!!!!! . I probably won't go much quicker on the 048's anyway as it will still wheelspin :? , maybe 0.2 secs on the launch and that's about it really

Clutch should be ok then. Is that a solid plate - with no springs?

Sell a french thing, buy the shafts, you know you can't type faster than everyone - it's going to be gridlock.

0.2??

Could be the difference between a 17 and a 16 :lol::lol::lol::lol::lol:

Yet again you present a fair point Mr nice, kind, funny, handsome Mk1 owner... that brain of yours works well at 1.00 am :thumbsup::thumbsup:

And Toby might be right again Gaz, buy some shafts in lieu of selling an Onion Carrier and avoid the paaaarrrppp paaaarrrrrpppp paaaarrrrp snaaaaap snaaapity snaaappp snap...:roll::?:(

i was wondering about this too. Ive done some fooking HUGE launches with my slipper fitted, and they havent broken. BUT, this could be down to the 175/50's i have fitted and them breaking traction all the time. :?

Well i spoke to a few people today and i now have all the prices and info so if anyones in the same situation as me then here goes  . First the confusing bit = wiether to use the 16 spline 2 piece atlas sized shafts to fit the english axle (can be bought the correct length) or to use group 1 ZF 18 spline 2 piece shafts to fit an english axle (need shortening) :? . If you decide on the 16 spline shafts then they can take stronger wheel bearings than the ZF 18 spline shafts can . This only really matters if your cars jumping and landing alot (rally car) , bouncing of kerbs (track car or rally car) or has "puff daddy" 10x17 inch "pimp my ride Essex look" wheels  . The ZF 18 spline shafts are the strongest at the end of the day so the choice is yours . The bigger shafts will fit all LSD diffs once you change the diff bearing size to match them . If your still paying attention then here comes the cost  . West Wales Rally Spares supply a new Tran-x LSD with big bearings for the new shafts , 2x 18 spline ZF group 1 shafts cut to size with new wheel bearings etc etc ready to fit for approx £1200 inc Vat + postage . Then the grippy street legal tyres are £100 each so adding that lot together and it's expensive  . So the question is do you want too spend at least £1400 to enable more grip off the line without breaking shafts (and run a faster 1/4 mile time etc) or go slower and save £1400 !!!!!!!

so you need to get on the line, then DONT go for it coz you will look silly if you break a shaft, but you will also look silly if you dont go for it after sorting the engine

its a tough shout :beer: wot gearbox you using??

I've skipped straight to the last page, so this might have been said earlier.

Didn't Tony (Petrolhead01) break a shaft last year at the pod? This was before he fit the mustang axle.

Wasn't he on street tyres rather than slicks?

so what about the 18 tooth side gears to take the thicker/bigger spline shafts that need to be fitted in the slipper before you fit these fancy shafts?

the 18 tooth side gears come with the new diff and are included in the £1200 price . The diff costs the same no matter what side gears you want

so you uprated everything but the shafts, so they are the week link, if you already have a tran x slipper, why dont you get the side gears from them and the shafts direct from quaife, thats wot i did, sorted

loads cheeper than wot you have been quoted m8  gears are 112.00 and i think the shafts were about 140 each they was the heavy duty EN30 ones not EN 24  they are about 120 each
