English axle halfshaft question

Has anyone ever broken a standard english halfshaft once rolling ? If they brake it's normally when the cars at a standstill and just starts moving forward at high revs (clutch drop etc ) off the lights . Mine are standard 1100 shafts and haven't broken yet with my driving technique (flat out everywhere :mrgreen: ) so was i wondering if i can't break them from a standstill then will they still last at 50mph sideways in 2nd with the back tyres alight (so far so good) !!!!!!!!!! :wink: . Has anyone busted one in second gear then ? :thumbsup:

iv never broke one nore have any of my mates. and we drive like we knocked em off. but then again we,re only running x/flows and pinto's unlike your million horse power fire breathing motor :lol::lol::lol:

in a slide your aplying more latteral stress than torsional which is what the shaft breaks under when doing a burn out. in a slide your more likely to fook a wheel bearing/hub. :thumbsup:

I think it's "unlikely" that you'll break one in second, but what if the launch nearly broke it and has weakened it?? Now your doing 50+ ( :mrgreen: ) on a shaft about to snap!! :sad:

I might test my standard english before I spend thouands on a atlas... loadsa peeps keep telling me it will be fine :lol:

 

Then again it will be behind a zetec turbo that will be in the region of 360hp with torque to match :ykt:

 

Ive heard chaps saying they run them behind cossys and dont break :?

Ive broken a few diffs, normally spider gears or pins. never a halfshaft, The LSD will also preserve the life of the shafts, as it shares the load between both shafts,

 

Lee, we were braking open diffs with 150ftlbs of torque/170hp Traction is the thing that breaks the shaft,

It may go in second as you change up, just as your start accelerating again. A serious amount of tourque goes through them, far more then youd think. In theory, if your car puts out 100lbft of tourque, first gear may well be 3:1 making 300lbft of tourque. Next up your diff will multiply that by the ratio, say 4, making 1200lbft of tourque.

 

Once you loose traction though dont worry, none of the drivetrain is under stress as your wheels are just spinning away, its as you put the pressure on (i.e. clutch kick or booting it) that itll let go.

mmmm very interesting :mrgreen: . Can any engineering types work out when the most twist/force/torque/snapping force etc etc is exerted onto a halfshaft please ? Is it when moving a heavy object from standstill in 1st gear or is it when the tyres are starting to grip in 2nd gear whilst moving ? :? ......... :thumbsup:

I used to use AO32r yokos on standard shafts and a quaife english diff up the pod and it seemed to last, shafts were still in one piece after lots of abuse :thumbsup:

i dont use english shafts, i changed the side gears to atlas, and use heavy duty EN30 quaife atlas shafts in an english casing, try that :thumbsup:

Thats what HT's recommend too mate, Adrian Hall's Zakspeed mk2 has them on that :thumbsup:

i used standard shafts in my orange escort with slicks for over a year and never broke anything :thumbsup:

So these Atlas shafts and side gears that fit into an english axle are supposed to be much stronger than standard 1100 shafts i presume ? :? . People are still snapping these in half on slicks with atmo pintos etc etc up the Pod so are they worth the money then or not ? :?

So what about ZF group 1 shafts then ? :? . If i remember it's 22 spline on standard English shafts (small and thin) , 16 spline on Atlas/english uprated type (big + fat) and 17 spline on the ZF shafts (must be big + fat as well then :mrgreen: ) . Has anyone ever tested them in a "twisting machine" then (if such a thing exists) and recorded at what torque the shafts snap ? :thumbsup:

16 spline is atlas & the bigger group 4 shafts are 18spline & i think only tran-x do a diff for these?? im sure its what toby uses in the cortina 18spline tran-x. I broke both my shafts in one sitting,but it was a big launch off the line on slicks. I think it broke when 1 as i launched & another changing into second as i keep the foot in when changing :twisted: but i don't think it helped as i was running a welded diff :roll:

they do have a machine to test torsional stress, i used one in college when i was doin engineering, but what it was called is long gone out of my head. dam them late nights gettin fooked off my head :lol:

mmmmm very confusing :? . group 1 , group 4 , 16 spline , 17 spline , 18 spline , 22 spline , one piece shafts , 2 piece shafts , big side gears , big bearings , floating bearings etc etc and that's only the bloody start !!!!!!!! :dope:

group 1 18 teeth atlas shafts and tranx diff with the side gears to suit. and they are as big as needed!! lol the only weak link then is the crown wheel and pinion. But they only tend to go if not setup right ;)
