emu Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 Does anyone have any suggestions on what is best to use to do this please. My first thought was to use those 10mm headed self-tappers you can get. Same as the ones that hold the radiators in. But then I wondered whether I would have to use spire clips or just screw them straight into the wing rail?? Then I thought it wold look nice to use small allen key bolts with a nut under the rail. Whichever option I choose I need to join the wing to the front panel, I cant think how to do that though, can you get clips to do it or would I need to weld extra tabs onto each panel??
over_head_cam Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 You can get those clips with a threaded insert. then tou would have the ability to adjust the panel before tightening it up They do a clip for bodyshops thet holds seamed panels together, that would work on the wing/front panel I think. They are a bit like the clips that hold the wearher strips in the doors
Rick Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 big rivets or speed clips that slot over an edge and you drill the hole for the screw

emu Posted March 8, 2008 Author Report Posted March 8, 2008 Something like these? I know the sort of spire clip you mean. Ive just been looking for them but so far only found the self tapping type Did find rivnuts though so im thinking about those now.
over_head_cam Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 Rivnuts are good, but I think you'd only get one shot at it. Unless they do one with a loose nut within the rivet? And yes, that's the clip I was thinking about. They are hardened and the barbs are pretty sharp so I reckon they would work. Or just pop rivet the join Just found this: http://www.bresco.com/acatalog/Spire_Nuts.html
emu Posted March 8, 2008 Author Report Posted March 8, 2008 spot weld it? Could do But then it wouldnt be bolted on Thanks for the link Phil. Id searched a few places to no avail, but they have a good selection, im sure ill find something there. Its a good job you havent charged me for all the advice youve given me!!
BIG G Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 i used seif tapper bolts and plates like phill said buti also puddle welded them. I had to seem weld the front panel to the wings but im no expert.
emu Posted March 8, 2008 Author Report Posted March 8, 2008 I want to try and keep the wings totally bolt on if I can, so no welding or rivets. I'll see how it goes. Hows yours coming along Mr G?
BIG G Posted March 8, 2008 Report Posted March 8, 2008 just fitting all the stuff back on now. then the engine will go in. all the hard works done but havin a nightmare as the stuff from rally design wont fit. eg bolt on double width kit 2" out on the rollbar mounting and the alloy rack mounts are to wide. but hey ho
emu Posted March 8, 2008 Author Report Posted March 8, 2008 Your nearly there then. It amazes me how parts for these things can fit so badly. They must have had enough practise at making them by now!
mk2 matt Posted March 10, 2008 Report Posted March 10, 2008 spot weld it? Could do But then it wouldnt be bolted on : ahh very true lol
bigglesmk2 Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 Can you get away with bolting wings on,thought they had to be welded?
sambo Posted March 11, 2008 Report Posted March 11, 2008 I got bolted on fibre glass wings mate. Using the big old hex head self tapper jobbies.
