trispage Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 I just got myself a second hand BOC turbo mig 130. It cost me the grand total of .............NOWT. Freecycle asctually worked for me. Any thoughts on these ?? Just got to teach myself to weld now, oh and i need a bigger bottle as the one it comes with only lasts 45 mins.
Twinkle Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 what size bottle is it? 45 mins sounds a very short time! might need a new regulator
trispage Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 its a little diddy thing BOC said 45 mins to an hour ?
Twinkle Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 i use the little ones and they last for a fair while longer than that even cranked up on full flow
trispage Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 thats reassuring, so is this welding lark hard to pick up? i can braze and other such stuff but never tried welding.
Twinkle Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 take a look here m8, its all about getting it set up right and plenty of practice, get a load of scrap and just weld it together http://www.oldskoolford.co.uk/phpBB2/vi ... hp?t=19958
trispage Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 Cheers Twinkle, i have read through that and the site, suppose its just down to practice in the end. Any tips or short cuts though ??
Tom Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 clean metal, good earth, gas and wire speed mate get a coupleof bits of scrap and have a practise. change the gas settings and wire speeds til it comes out as a nice continuous bead
trispage Posted March 22, 2008 Author Report Posted March 22, 2008 cheers Tom, is there a "general" setting or is it just what suits the individual welder ?
Tom Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 depends what settings their are on your mig mate - mine has 7 power settings and i generally use it on no.2 for general panel work and no.3 for thicker stuff. Wire speed varies mate you'll feel if its too slow or quick - if its too slow the wire will melt before it touches the panel and if its too fast it'll almost bounce the torch about. Again with gas settings i have mine quite high as i can get a brilliant weld with it like that but i should have it lower as it runs my bottle out quite quickly. as i said mate its different from mig to mig and you have to find the settings your comfortable with
lee_capri Posted March 22, 2008 Report Posted March 22, 2008 it's just pratice i remember the first time on a mk5 tina me old dad was around then i said that look's o.k dad he hit it with a hammer and it just poped off it take's year's to master and im still learning and been doing it 20yrs it's like they all said it's about prep same has any-thing dont give up once mastered you can build any-thing ive built car's up and made beaver's for truck's not bad for some one self taught
lead foot Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 try try try again !!!just keep going at it
sab6024 Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 My brother was gonna start trying to teach me to weld yesterday but I decided I'd rather cut the rot outta my rear arches instead
Fiesta Steve Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 An hour is a long time to actually be welding. If you are planning on doing lots of welding or building a space frame chassis then get a bigger bottle. But if its just for welding on a couple of wings, that involves just a few minutes of welding with a few spots here and there or MOT patches and you have a bottle that lasts an hour stick with it
caprinerd Posted March 23, 2008 Report Posted March 23, 2008 taught myself on an old chevette with an arce welder few holes and an interior fire ltaer and the car was done never looked back since
Mick The Mig Posted March 24, 2008 Report Posted March 24, 2008 Safety First. Buy the best welding mask you can afford, you only get one pair of eyes issued per lifetime. It's no use getting a free welding set then not being able to see what your doing. But as every one else has said practice and then more practice. When you find a suitable current rating and wire speed for a certain thickness of metal write it down for the future.
julian.jay Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 There are some good video clips on this site expertvillage.com Use the 'search' for welding. Also mig-welding.co.uk. Julian
trispage Posted March 26, 2008 Author Report Posted March 26, 2008 Cheers for the responses guys. Rest assured i have bought myself all the safety bits i need, gauntlets, mask, etc. I have got my hands on some scraps of metal, so am just going to try different settings until i get what i think is right (i will put up some pics soon). I maight just mark on the welder the different settings (i always loose scrap paper). I like welding.........its like glueing but for big boys
V8ian Posted March 26, 2008 Report Posted March 26, 2008 Excessive gas useage could be down to a holes liner too.
