tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Hi folks. Took my rs2000 for an mot, and the 45's are not set up properly and it failed on emissions. I know I was covered to and from the mot as its insured, but it has no mot and no tax. Couple of other things like brakes I will burn the midnight oil over the winter in the garage as its not coming out in the winter. But, I'm wondering, am I covered to drive it to a rolling road? as its going for mot failure work? I'm guessing on the side of no, but I may be wrong Thanks, Stu
johnny_h Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 You are not covered to drive a car to an MOT station technically. If the plod want to they can nail you to the wall for doing so. This depends mainly on the state of the car in roadworthyness terms. You are DEFINITELY not covered to drive it to a garage for work to be carried out and if caught you will be at the arresting officers mercy. Having said all that if your car looks roadworthy and you don't drive like a nob and have neon lights etc etc why would you be pulled over on your way to the rolling road
flyingbanana Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 i belive if the car is booked in for the mot you can drive to and from the mot station
tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 i belive if the car is booked in for the mot you can drive to and from the mot station Yes that is right, as long as its insured you can drive back and fore an mot station, Im wondering does this rule apply for mot work? But I tend to agree with Johnnyh< I don't think so
Fiesta Steve Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Why are you going to the rollers, is it to get them to set the emmisions for the test
tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 Yes, although it doesn't necessarily have to be the rollers, a tuning centre would be ok to pass the mot, it just so happens that a rolling road tuner is about 2 miles away
flyingbanana Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 no it wouldnt....i know colourtune do a carb balance gadget ...dont know if its any good tho
Wessie Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 if its only 2 miles m8 . . . go for it , but if the police catch you i did not just suggest that !
Fiesta Steve Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 You can do it yourself m8 Just turn the idle mixture screws (the ones with the springs on the nearest the manifold) in 1/4 of a turn. Do all 4, drive to test, get ticket, turn them back. It will run a bit rough but will get the emissions down.
tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 lol wessie. Yes Steve I was thinking that, but once I start fiddling, I don't want to knacker it up! Maybe I will take the risk, trouble is the plod will pull over an rs2000 just to look at it around here, sticks out like a sore thumb! Would be nice if we were covered to go for mot work though
Fiesta Steve Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 You won't knacker it up m8, Just turn them in 1/4 turn, then turn them back when your done. Thats all they'll do at the rollers.
Cookie Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 Im wondering does this rule apply for mot work? On the old failure sheets it used to state that you could only drive vehicle to and from mot station or to a pre-agreed garage for repairs, not sure if that has changed though.
tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 Ok I will try it, thanks Steve, carbs are not my forte! They said at the mot that she was about 3 times over on hydrocarbons! But the machine didnt seem to be working right, and I dont think they knew what the limit was for a mk2 pinto, probably never done one before!
johnny_h Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 If it's any help my MOT station just did a visual check of emmissions after i told them the twin 40's had just been tuned on a rolling road. Apparently it's legal. As long as it's ticking over nicely and theres not clouds of blue smoke out the back they may do the same.
Ahhh, that's the point Im after Cookie, I wonder if its still the same?
Fiesta Steve Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 My car failed the test with 5.8% A 1/4 turn got it down to less than 2%, the engine didn't like it but it passed. I adjusted them back before I left there forecourt
tawelfryn Posted November 13, 2006 Author Report Posted November 13, 2006 A mate of mine took his escort in for a mot, after it had been standing for a while, the old petrol didn't hardly produce any emissions! The mot tester asked if it was old petrol because of such a low reading
johnny_h Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 If you get stopped by plod and your car is deemed unroadworthy they can do you whether your car is booked in or not. FACT
emu Posted November 13, 2006 Report Posted November 13, 2006 I dont think they knew what the limit was for a mk2 pinto, probably never done one before! Check you havent got any air leaks and that the valve clearences are good too cos that can screw up you emmisions. The emmisions limits for ALL cars between about P-reg and C-reg are all the same (Max 4.5%CO and 1200 ppm HC). Im sure the garage have probably done a pinto before
