I tried welding my diff up last season. I drove the car to Crail, about 100 miles, and got a few runs in it, lunched the diff when i pulled the revs up a bit more on launching. After having a look at a part of one for sale here, I think I may have made a balls of it, though im a welder to trade! I just put a small run joining the planitory gears together, does anyone have any info and pics of how to do this properly?

many weld 5mm thick plates of steel between the side/planetary/spider gears on both sides and then do it again on the other side then again weld it to the carrier. Took me 2 hours almost to do it solid.

good luck.

I am thinking of making up some spools, they will be about £300 plus the dreaded, they will be splined to suit the GP4 quaiffe stuff, if anyone is interested PM me. If you need special splines PM me too, although they will be dearer.

If your worried about your welds mate, stick a couple of 10 mill bolts in between the gears then just turn your machine up and weld the hell out of it. That worked for me when I did banger racing. I never had one break.

Welding diffs??? WTF, youl slide all over the place, it will be lethal and you will wear your tyres out and fail mot and if you have an accident should have the book slung at you, this is the most ridiculus thing ive ever heard.

if you want grip buy an LSD like i did, get it replated and torqued up propper, yes it cost me a lot of money too but at least i wont kill anyone with it

thanks for the replies i'll give this some thought. before i jump in, its just a matter of cost and i do want to keep the car fully road going. does anyone have a noticable 60ft or quarter mile et with just changing from an open diff to a welded unit or spool or other lsd type ?

been told the spools used on suzuki sj diffs can be used but not shaw how strong they are, my dad got one from the state's for £80.

ive driven a few cars with locked diffs and found them saver once the rears broken than a open diff. . may sound mad but there more predictable as you know your staying sideways :D . of course highly dangrous for road use. . .
