Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 My old 2.1 budget pinto made 190bhp at Sanspeed. Bottom end was £400 from H.T's, head was £800 from burtons and secondhand 48's £250 from my brother That would of done 13's all day with decent tyres and right gearing Exactly . We've all seen how fast the pintos/atmo cossies/ XE's etc etc can go but i've only ever seen 1x duratec go so far . That was the Dave College mk2 escort with the full monty dogs bollox mountune 270+ bhp 2.3 litre running on bi-ethonel fuel . It run a 13.0 on street rubber and a 12.3 on pucker slicks
Toby Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 To be fair it ran 13.0 out of the box. Pintos have had a few years development. I recon give the Duratec a few years and everone will want one......or I am completely wrong. They'll all want a pre-crossflow!!
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 lol , your pre-xflow is a Ford engine though and not a Japo
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 To be fair it ran 13.0 out of the box. Well mines out the box , my car weighs more , has 50 bhp less , runs on pump fuel and will go as fast i reckon

To be fair his car was "comfy" too. And you will go as fast - if not faster.
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 Mines much more comfy , his had all the inside missing and a warm sticky summer track . I will blast a 13.0 or faster on street rubber so wait + see
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 You seem very confident!! Yes , when i done 5 x 13.4's at 105 mph i had a mis-fire (plug lead keep jumping off over 7000 revs) , the track was damp so had to lift off the throttle 3 times in 1st + 2nd , i had normal shitty no grip 175's + no burn out cos my brakes weren't working . So i reckon a 13.0 or faster is on the cards this year

Toby Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 Burn out does nothing for normal street rubber but burn it away though... Grip is only increased with heating up slick compound... I have heard that - but I'm not convinced.
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 12, 2008 Report Posted May 12, 2008 Burn out does nothing for normal street rubber but burn it away though... Grip is only increased with heating up slick compound... It don't really help mine in 1st gear but it would in 2nd for sure . I don't bother with burn outs myself but i will do some when trying to break into the 12's later on
Retromotorsport Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 10 A Mike Jenvey 1:40.527........... Duratec 7 A Paul Tickner 1:51.497............ Pinto two cars built to the same regs , one with a pinto and one with a Duratec .. both cars where fastest in their classes at Oultan Park
sambo Posted May 13, 2008 Author Report Posted May 13, 2008 10 A Mike Jenvey 1:40.527........... Duratec 7 A Paul Tickner 1:51.497............ Pinto two cars built to the same regs , one with a pinto and one with a Duratec .. both cars where fastest in their classes at Oultan Park Now, correct me if im wrong but that is nearly 11 secs in it !???!!! Proof???? Pudding?????
Retromotorsport Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 10 A Mike Jenvey 1:40.527........... Duratec 7 A Paul Tickner 1:51.497............ Pinto two cars built to the same regs , one with a pinto and one with a Duratec .. both cars where fastest in their classes at Oultan Park Now, correct me if im wrong but that is nearly 11 secs in it !???!!! Proof???? Pudding????? Happens every weekend they race .. the Duratecs lead the field .. and all the cars are identical .. they had to start a whole new class because the duratecs didnt give the Pintos a chance .. and these are all standard engines costing 5k for the duratec and most of the Pintos have cost more when you talk to the drivers .. which is why the pinto class is losing drivers to duratecs Just ask any engine builder for a class leading Race Pinto of 2l capacity, complete with carbs and clutch etc
Retromotorsport Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 another way of looking at this is how many pintos have blown up ??? thousands ... 10s of thousands .. Duratecs .. 1 maybe 2 Ok, before you all shout that the pinto has been around for years and the duratec is new ..its just to illistrate that .,. the duratec is in its infancy .. the Pintosaurus is a bit long in the tooth. Show me a 2L pinto from 30 years ago producing 300bhp ... ok make it easy .. 250 bhp from 2L .. no easier .. 230bhp from 2000cc. never happen I'm not knocking the Pinto..its a brillient lump of iron .. but thats just it, its old .. and it does take a lot of money to produce an engine pumping out 200bhp from 2000cc, and yes you can do it without a dry sump but take it round a trackday and see how long it lasts... If you compare like for like a 200 bhp duratec and 200bhp pinto with injection and dry sump cost the same .. .. but change cams and head .. ooh 250 .. you cant get a 2000cc pinto to 250 .. and then we have Gaz comparing one Duratec against a sea of Pintos .. up a drag strip .. the guys done a few runs against people who have doen 100's .. and lets face it ..theres a world out there away from a 1/4 mile strip and many of the cars on here are venturing out onto the race circuits .. At the end of the day .. its an easy job to get a 180bhp pinto in your car .. its harder to get a 180bhp duratec in your car .. but its impossible to get a 2000cc 300bhp pinto in that car
sambo Posted May 13, 2008 Author Report Posted May 13, 2008 Until the conversion parts costs come down, i dont think it is as accessable to many of us though. Yes it does seem to be a really good engine and to be honest i have not heard a single bad word against it! (apart from the conversion costs and what comes from GAZ!!!) its still a bloody ugly looking engine though!!
cossieglen Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 Just needs a nice aftermarket cam cover, the cosworth one looks nice with the carbon plug cover. It wont be long.

Guest MK1gaz Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 Why are they no faster than the old engines with 50+ bhp less then !!!!!!!! . Very strange that
Guest MK1gaz Posted May 13, 2008 Report Posted May 13, 2008 its still a bloody ugly looking engine though!! lol , and made by Mazda hence they don't fit !!!!!!!!
Guest Posted May 14, 2008 Report Posted May 14, 2008 Why are they no faster than the old engines with 50+ bhp less then !!!!!!!! . Very strange that Even stranger is Toby's Pre-Crosser is quicker than your N/A YB mota. So it cant be that great if your greatest engine ever can be beaten over a quarter by an engine originally designed in 1959. And I would not boast too much about Dyno Dynamics mate their rollas tell more fairy tales than you !

Bring one of your mates two bob duratecs up classic ford day then (no doubt on a trailer) , fit some street rubber to it and they can race mine
mk1super Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 Go on the x flows! Cos i cant afford nowt else
Toby Posted May 15, 2008 Report Posted May 15, 2008 So it cant be that great if your greatest engine ever can be beaten over a quarter by an engine originally designed in 1959. Coming up for it's 50th birthday then! Proper OLD skool! To be fair THE duratec, that is probably the only one seen at the strip to date, is quicker than mine at 12.3. But that is no reason for everyone to not just get on with it and fit a pre-crossflow in everything!! (Lawn mowers included)
