herb capri Posted May 8, 2008 Report Posted May 8, 2008 HEY CHAPS, well heres a topic for a bit of a grey area , a mate of mine has built a superb and very sturdy mk1 escort and has had a problem finding r s wings,so decided to fit fibre glass ones,[nothing new there ]after a lengthy resto he has taken it to be mot'd and the mot tester refused to give a certificate on the car,despite it meeting ALL the mot criteria. why? BECAUSE NO CRASH TESTS WERE EVER DONE ON MK1 ESCORTS WITH FIBREGLASS WINGS! and because no production model was ever produced with them!!!!!!! WELL IS THIS THE WAY OF THIGS TO COME? will we have to S V A our cars if they are fitted with fibre glass panels? whats your thoughts?

If they could fail simply because it was never done on a production car then surely every cosworth,duratec or zetec conversion would allso fail.Allso how many four linked cars are out there surely this would be more of a concern than fiberglass wings.sorry for the rant but it does wind me up when some one is given a little bit of power and seems to just love abusing it when you do mot tester training the main message believe it or not is if you are unsure then pass and advise only fail if it is clearly dangerous or against specific mot requirements.

emu Posted May 9, 2008 Report Posted May 9, 2008 He cant fail it for that mate. Whether a car has ever been crash tested is irrelevant. Would he fail a kit car or a model T?? Go ask to speak to the manager and if you dont get anywhere then get an appeal form from them.
