bomber1 Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 right iven got an overheating problem on the zodiac. its had the head gasket done tho not rule out that it needs re doing but the back of the block has black gunge in it and cant seem to clear it! this afternoon ive stripped the manifolds off and knocked the core plugs out. there was a bit off crap floating around but not as much as i thought ive had the jetwash in there but my main concern is theres still no water coming out of the water tap at the rear off the engine. is there anything that i can use th clear it short of hoisting the block out? any suggestions pls
emu Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 try chucking a couple of dishwasher tablets in there. it works beautifully for cleaning out emulsified oil, so it might do the trick for you
flyingbanana Posted July 19, 2008 Report Posted July 19, 2008 my xflow used to be blocked by the plug and the only thing i was able to et the water out from the drain plug was using a small screwdriver and digging around......wasn't until i rebuilt the engine to find the true extent of the rust inside ...4 big hand fulls of rust
bomber1 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 try chucking a couple of dishwasher tablets in there. it works beautifully for cleaning out emulsified oil, so it might do the trick for you tried everything else out so will put it back together and try that ive bleed the water system through a couple of times now so dont think its that. i dont think its rust as such as im getting black mud/sludge type crap out of the hole for the water tap but run out of things long enough to clear it out
bomber1 Posted July 21, 2008 Author Report Posted July 21, 2008 do i need to put anything to seal the new core plugs when i put them in?
Gonzo Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 Might be worth smearing a bit of red hermetite or similar round 'em when you knock 'em back in, but far as I know, as long as the holes aren't pitted and nasty, you should be good just to whack 'em in and be ok.
V8ian Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 the sludge you are talking about is probably an accumulation of rust and things like Radseal, you can buy a rad flush which may do the job, but the only real way to sort this is get the block chemically cleaned, if you look in the bottom of the rad you will probably find as much crap there
Doc Posted July 21, 2008 Report Posted July 21, 2008 mate get it flushed out i couldnt believe what came out of the essex ! well worth £30 to get someone to do it .
bomber1 Posted July 22, 2008 Author Report Posted July 22, 2008 mate get it flushed out i couldnt believe what came out of the essex ! well worth £30 to get someone to do it . any info on who and where does this as my engine is now on the floor so can be taken somewhere to get it done
bomber1 Posted July 22, 2008 Author Report Posted July 22, 2008 guildford surrey m8. my main concern is i cant get any water out off the drain tap even though ive got the rear core plug out and jet washing it both ways. ie down through the core plug and through the water drain!
emu Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 As Ian says, you'll probably find that the rad is sludged up too. might be worth whipping it along to your local specialists and getting them to flow test it for you. Would be a shame to stick it all back together and still have problems from an inefficient radiator

At least it did with a hosepipe shoved up it. when it was flowtested though it was only flowing 20% of what it should have been. Our local Rad place does it free so its worth asking around and seeing Fair enough about getting you block sorted first though
V8ian Posted July 22, 2008 Report Posted July 22, 2008 If you have still got the engine in the carand the core plugs in, its probably worth trying a block flush, it could also be worth talking to the rad man on advise about this, I know where I used to work we used to use stuff refered to as "Pickling Acid", deffo not for your onions, I have a strange feeling blocks are cleaned out with Caustic Soda, ask advice from the Rad man, there are plenty of people on here who come from your area who will know a good rad man!!
bomber1 Posted July 24, 2008 Author Report Posted July 24, 2008 good news finaly found the the last bit of blockage in the block water now seems to be getting every where it needs to now so well chuffed
