Rick Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 since the weather has warmed up, i turn my car off and it runs for a few seconds afterwards, coughs then stops. whats all that about? is it like evaporating fuel keeping it going?
4 door escort Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 think that's called pre ignition caused by hot spots on the pistons (made by carbon build up) not 100% sure though
Tom Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 timing it doesn't do it any good mate so sort your iming out and if it does it again make sure you stall it with the clutch, in gear
Copey Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 definatly get it sorted, my old pinto did it, and i didnt know what it was, engine went bang after a while!!
lee_capri Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 tom dont that mean's it's to far advarnched so possable just turn it back a fraction
Tom Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 erm i think so, i forget. its been a while since i played with dizzies i think when its over running like that it's actually running backwards
ASBO CAPRI Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Sounds like your engines overheating causing pre ignition. Basicly the combustion chamber is so hot its igniting fuel with no spark like a glow engine. Something you don't want as it puts a lot of stress on the crank and conrods.

Pre -ignition is pinking not running on (sometimes referred to as dieseling). As said, check your timing and carburation out thoroughly.
Toby Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Possibly a better fuel would help, optimax (V power) Years ago my Cortina used to do it if I filled up at a certain petrol station.
over_head_cam Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 Unfortunately unleaded doesn't help, it hasn't got a high enough octane content to control the burn. So it can go off bang at any time
Toby Posted July 28, 2008 Report Posted July 28, 2008 So it can go off bang at any time Sound like me in the bed room...... Obviously this is a joke and I am incredible in the sack Obviously I am not hitting on you!! Please don't read anything into the wink!
Rick Posted July 28, 2008 Author Report Posted July 28, 2008 erm i think so, i forget. its been a while since i played with dizzies i think when its over running like that it's actually running backwards that makes sense as i noticed the carb spit exhasut fumes think its because iv been using fuel additive
